It is an opportunity for students to become involved In the planning for "on campus " entertainment activities and to develop organizational. leadership and management skills . Over tile past year, UC8 has been responsible for over 50 diverse programs for our student population . These have included weekend programs , tailgating , lectures . concerts , Niteclass participation shows and many more . Our 120 plus members worked extremely hard this year to maintain our high quality of programming . and UCB is lookillg forward to maintnlning this same level of competence in 1990-91 . Not onl y is g r oss income diffi c ult to forecast a year in advance , but e xpe n ses a re parti c u larly in the recent unstable and inflationary eco n omy . S in ce I have the r espons i bil~ty for University Cen ter Board's budget as adv i sor , I am particularly awa re of the difference be t ween a predictable fixed income and expense op er a tion and a flexible and somewha t unpredictable one . To date , UCB ' s budge t ing process has bee n r elatively informal. Wi th out a doubt , we a r e going t o h ave t o seek (and h ave) more r efined and re li able methods in the current financial environment. Faced wit h "roller coas ter" enrollments and infl a t ed dollars , organizations li ke ourselves a r e making some c ru c ial dec i sions about how their budgeted monies are spent and wl, at be nefi t s will accrue f r om eacll a lloca ti on . To i nsu r e a max i mum return on eac h d o llar invested in an o r ganiza ti on , facu lty, staff and UCB need t o deliberate the me rit s of the said re ques t . PUBLIC RELATIONS UCB h as become a more visible organ i zation maki n g tile viable oppor tunit y for in comi n g s tudents to become inv o lved with U8 . As a re sult of tlli s visibility UCB l,as establislled wl, at we Ilope are key programs and alliances witll particular g r oups o n cam pu s wlth which to sponsor futur e programs . Some of th ese g r oups h ave included the Rodes-Ilelm lecture commit t ee , Black student r ecrui tment, UCS , facul t y lecture commit t ee , UCAM , RIIA , IFC-Panhell enic , S tu dent Ileal th Services , intramurals, alumni assoc i at i o n and ASG . It is very important t o work clos ely with tllese and more g r oups to expand our traditional program base. The mo r e diverse inv olvement UCH lias the more invo l vemen t we ca n expect f rom the student population . CONCERT PROGRAMMING CONTRA CT FOR GARRETT BA LL ROOM Ove r til e past yea r I have been working close l y with Sco tt Taylor , Dir ecto r of Student Activ iti es , Dean Il o ward Bailey a nd F r ankli n Berry , Un i ve r s it y Attorney, to establish a co ntr ac tu al si tu a ti on for Ga rrett Ba l lroom for fully promoted co n ce rt s . Bec ause of t he demis~ of a r ena type p r og ra mming , WKU h as s uffered in a l ack of mu sic , conc er t shows . It i s clea r ly evid ent th a t with th e establishment of a cont r ac t to be u sed by promoters fo r th e use of Gar rett Ball r oom, UCB could potentially sponso r tw o t o three concerts per semester . I have worked closely witll a numb e r of c re dib le regional promo t ers who have lent their suppo r t for this s itu ation if it occurs . Our geographical demographics make the establishment of a concert series a viable one. Si tuated on the highly traveled interstate systems north and southeast of the Mississippi River . and also located between several major concert centers makes Bowling Green and WKU in particular a "natural" stop off for routed shows.
