Originals, photographs.  SC2016.46.1   BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE    Edward Wallace Barr, the son of Edward Tipton Barr (1855-1922) and Mary (Anderson) Barr (1860-1943), was born on 18 February 1887 in Bowling Green, Kentucky.  He attended Ogden College, Fishburne Military School in Waynesboro, Virginia, and Purdue University.  He graduated from the Louisville College of Dentistry in 1911 and joined the practice of his father, who had operated a dental office in Bowling Green since about 1880.  On 11 December 1915, Barr married Elizabeth “Bess” Louise Moseley (1893-1994) and they were the parents of two sons, Edward Wallace Barr, Jr. and Robert M. Barr.  From 1917-1919, Dr. Barr served as an officer in the U.S. Army Dental Corps.  He was in charge of the dental offices at the American Expeditionary Forces headquarters in Chaumont, France, where his patients included General John J. Pershing.  After the war, Barr returned to his Bowling Green practice.  He died in Bowling Green on 17 December 1962 and was interred in Fairview Cemetery.   COLLECTION NOTE    This collection consists mostly of materials relating to Edward Wallace Barr’s World War I service with the U.S. Army Dental Corps.  A few family letters and papers are also included.  A collection inventory is in Folder 1.  Folder 2 contains family correspondence and papers, including an early courtship letter to Barr’s mother; a recommendation on behalf of his father given to the California State Board of Dental Examiners; a letter of Barr’s mother to his brother Lockwood on the approaching death of an aunt; and “Sixty-Five Years of Dentistry,” a summary by Barr on his family’s work in dentistry.    Folder 3 contains data, clippings, and Barr’s officer’s record book relating to his World War I service.  Also included are two letters regarding equipment needs and General John Pershing’s dental history, as well as a letter discussing the timing of Dr. Barr’s postwar return to the United States.   Folder 4 contains a book with notes Barr took on lectures he attended at the Army Sanitary School, Dental Section, in 1917.  Included are lectures on war wounds and diseases and on the effects of gas, as well as dental techniques and treatment of soldiers. 2  MSS 576 Manuscripts & Folklife Archives, Library Special Collections, Western Kentucky University   Folder 5 contains Barr’s dental appointment book recording names, dates and times for his military patients, as well as a few accounts for dental work.
