• Leadership development of healthcare professionalshas been prioritized in the NHS as an essentialstrategy to improve organizational outcomes andpatient care [1].• This has given rise to several leadership developmentprogrammes, frameworks, and models to support thisenterprise [1].• One way to evaluate the effectiveness of leadership isby using the quality-of-care indicator, patientexperience [2].• However, the conceptual and evidential link betweenleadership development and patient experience hasnot been systematically investigated yet.IntroductionResults•Participants: Purposeful sampling of four physiotherapists working in the English National Health Services (NHS) who have attended a leadership development programme.•Data collection: Semi-structured interviews conducted with participants, audio-recorded with consents and transcribed verbatim.•Data Analysis: Qualitative content analysis used to identify patterns and themes. Discussion• Findings from our study reveal a conceptual gap whenlinking leadership with patient experience andresonates with current evidence highlighting thedifficulty in understanding the specific role ofleadership in enhancing patient care [3].• In addition, team climate (that is, the perception ofthe work environment) may play a key role in themechanism of leadership influence on patientexperience.• There is some indication in the literature that in thepresence of mediators such as a positive workenvironment and staff empowerment, a decrease inadverse patient events and an improvement in patientsatisfaction will occur [4].ContactAniekan Ekpenyong, 25041771@edgehill.ac.uk, ekpenyoa@edgehill.ac.uk• Leadership was hypothesized to affect the patientexperience in two broad ways: at the micro-level andmeso-level.• At the micro-level, leadership was said to influencepatient experience through clinician leadership ofthemselves and in their interactions with patients.• At the meso-level, patient experience was said to beinfluenced indirectly through the demonstration ofleadership with colleagues during care delivery bothat the individual level and within teams, particularly inprioritizing patients during the provision of care.1.
