I ncluded in this segment will be removal of the current roof and re -pair of the rafters and framework as needed. Repairs wi ll involve cornice work, installation of new wood sheathinv" installation of roofing felt over t he sheathing, installation of hand sp l it wood shakes and custom made shake ridge caps. (White oak shakes were com-monly used in this a r ea before 1880. Because white oak shakes are pro -hibitively expensive, our first choice will be red oak in order to reconstruct the roof as closely a~ possib le to the oriGinal. ) This phase wil l a l so entail some masonry work on the building . A later brick addition wi l l be carefully taken down (retention is not economica l ly feasible due to serious structural damage and de-terioration) and the bricks salvag -ed for reuse in rebuilding the front wall of the structure (the present wal l was ext ended toward the street ca . 19 20). Appropriate mor tar will be used t o match the color , texture a nd composition of the existing joints in the original section. Removal of the present roof and salvage of brick was be8un Dec -ember 4 with the help of Ann Elliot, Becky and Kevin Hunter, John Parker, Dick Pfefferkorn , Charlie Ray and Rick Voakes. Richard Webber REVOLVING FUND GRANT Landmark's request for a por-tion of the $75,000 allocated to the state historic preservation grant fund has been approved by the Kentucky Heritage Council . Land -mark will receive a $6,000 ~rant which will supplement the Landmark Revolving Fund.
