How Menelik came to have a mint

Abstract

It is well known that the innovations introduced by Emperor Menelik II brought into existence a national coinage based on the widely accepted Maria Theresa taler, which had constituted the currency in Abyssinia since the middle of the 19th century. He had been convinced by his European advisors that having his own coins (together with postal stamps) would be a strong sign of sovereignty.
