Rochester General Hospital Edition                      MAY 2012            Delirium in the Hospital Setting     Delirium is an acute change in consciousness      accompanied by inattention and either a change    in cognition or perceptual disturbance.  Delirium     can result in increased length of hospital stay,     ventilator time, and mortality. It is estimated that     ICU costs associated with delirium are between     $4 billion and $16 billion annually in the US. Hand washing is easy to do and is one of the most effective ways to prevent the spread of many types of disease.
