Estos espacios en los que el hombre trabaja no responden a la definiciónacadémica de arquitectura, pero cumplen muchas de sus funcionalidades pues porejemplo deben proporcionar aislamiento térmico del exterior o mantener la calidaddel aire respirado y, como ‘máquinas habitadas’ que son, deben hacerlo de maneraeficiente, evitando derroches energéticos innecesarios. Por tanto, se trata de‘máquinas habitadas’ que ofrecen altas prestaciones, que han sido contrastadas encondiciones de uso exigentes y, que por su propia concepción, priorizan la eficienciaenergética."Por otra parte, el arquitecto -como técnico generalista- no debería pretenderdesarrollar desde cero tecnologías eficientes aplicadas en la edificación, puessupondría el afianzamiento de la endogamia en la arquitectura, que habitualmenteno tiende a mirar más allá de lo que considera sus propios deseos de ‘innovación’,cuando la realidad es que otras áreas del saber llevan décadas de ventaja.Son muchos los ejemplos de arquitectos que han sabido ‘leer’ en otras áreas delsaber cuáles son los principales avances que debían incorporarse en la arquitectura.Una importación de conocimientos que en el pasado se ha realizadofundamentalmente en el plano constructivo y de montaje, promoviendo laconstrucción seca y la incorporación de elementos seriados. Tan solo unos brevesejemplos al respecto: En 1964 Jean Prouvé afirmaba que “los cohetes espacialesson maravillosos y el avión, el coche, nuestra bicicleta, nuestra motocicleta, lostrenes, las máquinas, las presas, los puentes, nuestros pequeños barcos de vela,etc. No quiero enumerar más; estos logros bastan para constatar que todo elrendimiento científico e industrial es realmente apasionante” 1; o también se podríarecordar la reflexión de Buckminster Fuller cuando decía: “Encontré que todos estoscomplejos de barcos eran las herramientas superiores de sus momentos históricosrespectivos” 2.Son muchos los sistemas de instalaciones que campos ajenos al arquitectónico,como el aeroespacial, el naval o la automoción, han desarrollado hace décadas yque se continúan utilizando en estos momentos, abarcando desde los sistemas dereciclaje total del agua hasta la recuperación de calor de los humos de combustiónpara la producción de electricidad. Sin embargo, dados los condicionantes deextensión de esta comunicación, no tiene cabida aquí una descripción detallada,pero sí ejemplificar esta ‘recuperación de conocimientos’ a través de tres proyectosactualmente en curso en la Escuela de Arquitectura de la Universidad de Navarra.#El primero de ellos se refiere a la recuperación del metano existente en los sistemasde ventilación de viviendas. Se trata de un proyecto que analiza en términosenergéticos, constructivos, económicos y normativos, la viabilidad delaprovechamiento del metano que se genera en agrupaciones de viviendas en altura,para su empleo como apoyo para los sistemas de producción de calor (calderas)alimentados por gas natural.Este metano está localizado en los sistemas de ventilación tanto de la red detuberías de saneamiento fecal de los edificios como en la red de extracción de aseosy baños. Además ha de considerarse que el ser humano también emite metano -escierto que en cantidades mucho menores que los rumiantes por ejemplo- pero, enconjunto, se trata de millones de personas que emiten metano como resultado delproceso digestivo fundamentalmente.Al uso energético que plantea el proyecto, hay que añadir el efecto de dejar de emitira la atmósfera estas cantidades de metano, ya que atendiendo a distintas fuentes, elmetano es un gas catalogado entre los que repercuten en el efecto invernadero de laTierra, siendo el causante de una tercera parte del calentamiento global. De hecho,se calcula que a finales del siglo XXI el efecto del metano habrá superado alproducido por el dióxido de carbono.El segundo proyecto trata la integración avanzada de pilas de combustible en laedificación, analizando la implantación técnica, energética, económica y normativade distintas tecnologías de pilas de combustible en diferentes tipologías edificatoriasen uso, de modo que los resultados de esta experiencia real permita suextrapolación a proyectos futuros de implantación de pilas de combustible enedificios construidos o por construir.$En España existen importantes grupos de investigación que están desarrollandodistintas líneas de investigación sobre las pilas de combustible: PEM, SOFC, con laobtención de hidrógeno a partir de energías renovables, uso en motores de gruposelectrógenos o de vehículos… Estos grupos han realizado notables avances en susrespectivas áreas, e incluso algunas experiencias se han implantado en edificios. Noobstante, no se ha planteado hasta ahora un proyecto de gran escala en el queestas investigaciones y experiencias se desarrollen integradss en edificiospermanentemente en uso (no prototipos) de distinto tamaño y carácter, para analizarla implantación masiva de estos sistemas de producción de energía en nuestro país,así como para continuar la evolución de los distintos tipos de pilas en función de lasnecesidades energéticas de la edificación.El último proyecto se refiere a la construcción y monitorización de un prototipo desistema de acondicionamiento por termoelectricidad aplicado a un espacio habitado.El proyecto consiste en construir un módulo prefabricado, a modo de local habitadosimplificado, y monitorizar durante un año el comportamiento de una instalacióntermoeléctrica que dé servicio a dicho modulo (Fig.1).La termoelectricidad se basa en el efecto Peltier (descubierto en 1834). Se trata deuna tecnología que se ha aplicado a espacios civiles habitados por el hombre, comovagones de tren, y con anterioridad en espacios militares como los submarinos, sinque haya llegado a aplicarse en la arquitectura por su alto precio, a pesar de queofrece una altísima fiabilidad y mínimos costes de mantenimiento.A modo de conclusión, puede decirse que estos sistemas tomados de otros áreas,aunque no están pensados para ser eficientes ni sostenibles en los términos en queactualmente se conciben en la arquitectura, lo son, ya que han nacido en un%contexto de trabajo exigente que prioriza el funcionamiento preciso, fiable y conmínimas necesidades de mantenimiento.Si los responsables de la investigación en arquitectura se aprovecharan de estosavances para incorporarlos en la edificación, no serían necesarios gastos tanelevados para la investigación fundamental, sino que tendrían que realizarse lasinversiones necesarias –previsiblemente menores- para la adaptación de estastecnologías existentes –y ya probadas- en el ámbito de la arquitectura y elurbanismo.Humans expend an important part of their lives working, and no always in buildings:they could be on a ship, oil platform, airplane or train… These spaces do not followthe ‘architecture’ academic definition, but they achieve many of their functionalitiese.g. provide thermal insulation or assure the interior air quality, and theses ‘inhabitedmachines’ do it in an efficient way, offering high features contrasted in demandingconditions.In other way, the architect, as a general technician, must not develop de novoefficient technologies for its appliance in building, then this would be thereinforcement of the architectural endogamy that usually does not look the importanttechnological advances of other areas. It is easy to find different architects who haveknown ‘reading’ in other areas what are the main advances to incorporate inarchitecture. This knowledge importation has been made in the past into theconstructive process, promoting e.g. the dry building or the use of serial elements.Only two examples about this. In 1964, Jean Prouvé asserted “rockets are wonderfuland the airplane, the car, our bicycle, our motorcycle, the trains, the machines, the&dams, the bridges, our little sail ships, etc. I do not want to enumerate more; theseachievements are enough to check the amazing industrial and scientific capacities” 1.Or we can also remember the following Buckminster Fuller reflection: “I found thatthese complex ships were the upper tools in their respective historical moments” 2.The installation systems from the aerospace, naval or automotive industries havebeen developed during decades and cover from total water recycling to heat recoveryin combustion fumes for the power generation. Nevertheless, due to extensiondetermining of this communication, we are not going to describe them, but toexemplify this ‘knowledge recovery’ through three projects which are in developing inthe School of Architecture of the Universidad de Navarra.The first of them refers to the recovery of the existing methane in the housingsventilation systems. It’s deal with a project that analyzes in energetic, constructive,economic and legal terms, the viability of use the methane that is generated in thegroups of height housing, for its use as support for the natural gas fed heatingproduction systems (boilers).This methane is located in the ventilation systems as plumbing pipelines net of thebuildings as in toilettes and bathrooms extraction net. In addition it has to be considerthat humans also gives out methane -it is true that in lower amount that for exampleruminants- but, as a whole, there are million persons giving out methane as result ofthe digestive process.To the energetic use that sets out the project, it has to be add the effect of stoppinggiving out to the atmosphere this amount of methane. Attending to different sources,the methane is a catalogued gas between those who have reverberate in thegreenhouse effect of the Earth, being the causer of a third part of the global warming.'In fact, it is calculated that at the end of the 21st century the methane effect will haveovercome the carbon dioxide effects.The second project deal with the advanced integration of fuel cells in buildings,analyzing the technical, energetic, economic and legal implantation of differenttechnologies of fuel cells in different building types in use, the results of this realexperiences allow his extrapolation into future projects of implantation of fuel cells inconstructed buildings or for constructing.In Spain there are important groups of investigation that are developing different linesof investigation on fuel cells: PEM, SOFC, with the obtaining hydrogen fromrenewable energies, use in engines of electricity-generating groups or of vehicles...These groups have realized notables advances in their respective areas, andenclosed some experiences have been implanted in buildings. Nevertheless, therehas not set out till now a project of great scale in which all these investigations andexperiences, develop integrated in buildings permanently in use (no prototypes) ofdifferent size and character, to analyze the massive implantation of these energyproduction systems in Spain, as well as to continue the evolution of the differenttypes of cells depending on the energetic needs of the building.The last project refers to the construction and the monitoring of a thermoelectricity airconditioning system prototype applied to an inhabited space. The project consist inbuild a prefabricated module, like a simplified inhabited place, and monitoring for ayear the behaviour of a thermoelectric installation that gives service to the abovementioned module.The thermoelectricity bases on Peltier effect (overdraft in 1834).
