JOURNAL OF GERMAN-AMERICAN STUDIES, VOL. 13, NO. l ( 1978) EARLY PARISHIONERS OF ST. MATTHIAS PARISH, GREENFIELD, WIS. By VICTORIA WILSON Milwaukee, Wis. This parish, originally called Holy Cross, was renamed after Rev. Matthias Steiger, who was pastor in 1849-1850. In 1850 Rev. J. A. Stein was given the task of organizing St. Matthias Parish. The site (three acres) was donated (one acre each) by Herman Sauer, Joseph Schmid and Garhart Zingsheim. The church was finished in June 1851 at a total cost of $717 .33. In 1852 a rectory was built for Father Stein at the cost of $271.
