About 170 participants from 24 countries gathered inInterlaken, Switzerland to attend “Bioavailability 2001;Bioavailability of Micronutrients in Relation to PublicHealth”, May 30-June 1. State-of-the-art research relat-ed to bioavailability of minerals and trace elements, vitamins and provitamins and minor plant constituentswas discussed during the plenary lectures, workshopsand poster sessions. The plenary presentations includedcurrent topics such as “Genetic engineering and plantbreeding approaches to improve zinc and iron bioavail-ability from foods” (Dr. Janet King), “Genetic polymor-phism and mineral absorption” (Dr. Roger Sunde),“Phytoestrogen absorption and metabolic action” (Dr.K. Setchell) and “Folate bioavailability and health” (Dr.A. Molloy).The Local Organizing Committee was based at the In-stitute of Food Science at the Swiss Federal Institute ofTechnology (ETH) in Zurich. The Local OrganizingCommittee and the Scientific Committee were chairedby Drs. Lena Davidsson and Richard Hurrell (ETH).Bioavailability 2001 was sponsored by The Inter-national Life Sciences Institute (ILSI) Human NutritionInstitute (USA), The International Nutritional AnemiaConsultative Group (INACG) and The International Vita-min A Consultative Group (IVACG) through fundingfrom the United States Agency for International Develop-ment (USAID), Nestlé (Switzerland), Unilever (TheNetherlands), F. Aeschbach AG Gränichen (Switzerland),Chemgas (France) and Pharma Nord APS (Denmark)The Federation of European Chemical Societies (FECS)and the Swiss Nutrition Society were patrons of themeeting.
