It is not a reference book for specialistsin infectious diseases but covers all practically importantfields of pediatric infectious diseases. The major part isdedicated to diagnosis and treatment, making it especiallyinteresting for daily practice and primary care in thehospital and outside the hospital. As infectious problemsare the most frequent pathologies encountered in thepediatric practice, this book is an excellent preparation forgeneral pediatrics.The contents are well organized discussing in a synthesizedmanner (a) the basic microbiology and antimicrobial therapies,(b) the most common infections including the problem of thefebrile child, (c) special problems, for example the neonate orthe immunocompromized patient or HIV infection, etc., and (d)prevention and infection control. This easy-to-read book is anup-to-date book summarizing the authors experience as well asthe evidence in the literature. It concentrates on what isimportant in each domain. The tables and figures as well as thesummary of the major points at the end of each chapter areparticularly useful, and the suggested readings, which arelimited to not more than 20 to 30 references, are extremelyhelpful if the reader is looking for more information or has aspecial interest.Eur J Pediatr (2010) 169:131DOI 10.1007/s00431-009-0984-2S.
