The frequency of pineal tumors in Japanis five times as high as in western countries.The first section deals with Tumors of Pineal CellOrigin.The first chapter deals with the pathology of pinealparenchymal tumors including immunohistology and elec-tron microscopy. It ends with a brief account of geneticalterations. The second chapter of this section describes theoccipital transtentorial approach and combined treatmentsof pineal parenchymal tumors. It also includes a briefdescription of histopathological findings. The third chapteraddresses the role of streotactic radiosurgery in themanagement of pineal parenchymal tumors.The second section deals with Tumors of Germ CellOrigin.The first chapter of this section describes the pathologyof these tumors including their histogenesis and classifica-tion as well as a brief account of genetic alterations; then,follows a chapter on the general management of thesetumors and another one on the strategy of combinedtreatment of germ cell tumors with a classification accord-ing to prognosis. The next chapter is on radiation therapyand includes a review of prospective studies with chemo-therapy and radiation, followed by a chapter on stereotacticradiosurgery for pineal and related tumors (germ cell aswell as pineal parenchymal tumors). The next chapter is aproposal for a modern strategy with radiation and chemo-therapy. The last chapter deals with the quality of life ofextremely long-time germinoma survivors mainly treatedwith radiotherapy.This book provides a good picture of the state of the artin the management of pineal tumors. From the purelytechnical neurosurgical point of view, I missed thedescription of the infratentorial supracerebellar approach.The volume has the drawback of a multi-author book withsome repetitions from one chapter to another.
