312 Environmental ConservationIt proved quite possible, in spite of some small disadvan-tages, to create a programme consisting of talks, discus-sions, shows, excursions (mainly to nature reserves), andvarious social entertainments, in which both young andadult members of the seminar-camp took part with deepinterest.The workshop approved resolutions suggesting importantprinciples and concepts, and ways and means for furtherdevelopment of out-of-school environmental educationin East European socialist countries. The organizers, whodeserve warm acknowledgement for their internationalwork with Young Pioneers, intend to publish a report,including the main documents from the meeting, inRussian. It has also been recommended that such inter-national camps become a 'tradition' to be held every yearin the cooperating countries.JAN CEROVSKYBudecskd 2712000 Praha 2Czechoslovakia.WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY,LONDON, ENGLAND,5 JUNE 1974World Environment Day was marked in London thisyear by an Environmental Exhibition which was openedby the Minister of State, Department of the Environment.It was mounted in the Commonwealth Institute, Kensing-ton High Street.The Department's film 'It's All Man-made' had itspremier. This film traces the course of the River Trentthrough Central England from its source in the ruralPennines to the sea of Spurn Head Nature Reserve.Although by no means the longest or largest river in England,the Trent passes many environmental problems—derelictland resulting from mining and mining spoil, large urbanareas and sewerage disposal, the heating effects of largepower stations, and conservation of both wildlife andhistorical centres such as Newark. The film identified theproblems, and showed how some of the solutions wereworking out in practice.After the film the Minister of State gave a short addressbefore opening the Exhibition. One important aspect inpolitical decision-making is public support—the Ministerwelcomed the 'environmental lobby' which strengthenedhis hand at a time when there is competition for financialresources. He implied that, with limited financial resources,his priority would be in urban areas and centres of largepopulation. The Exhibition, arranged by the Departmentof the Environment, showed aspects of environmentalamelioration in its widest sense.MICHAEL B. USHER, Senior LecturerDepartment of BiologyUniversity of YorkYork, England.REGIONAL MEETING ON THE USE OF ECOLOGICALGUIDELNIES FOR DEVELOPMENT IN TROPICAL FORESTAREAS OF SOUTH-EAST ASIA, HELD AT BANDUNG,INDONESIA, 28-31 MAY 1974The general background of this meeting has been sum-marized in the report by Dr Gerardo Budowski on theallied meeting held in Caracas, Venezuela, in February 1974,and published in the preceding issue (page 236).Representatives from Australia, Indonesia, Malaysia,Papua-New Guinea, the Philippines, and Thailand, tookpart in the meeting, which was convened by IUCN incollaboration with the Government of Indonesia and underthe sponsorship of UNEP. The meeting was co-sponsoredby FAO, UNDP, and UNESCO, and was supported bythe Fund of UNEP, the Swedish International DevelopmentAuthority, and WWF. The Institute of Ecology,Padjadjaran University, Bandung, acted as hosts.Dr J. B. Sumarlin, Minister of State and Chairman ofthe State Committee for the Environment of Indonesia,opened and closed the conference, which was attendedby Ministers, senior civil servants, and heads of technicaldepartments. A great variety and many shades of opinionwere expressed in the course of the lively and constructivediscussions. The countries represented have very differentpopulation densities, degrees of development, fertilityof the soil, and ways of life, but there was astonishingunanimity of viewpoints on the need for guidelines, andthe conference had little difficulty in formulating the textof some 70 Guidelines which were approved at the finalsession. It was agreed as essential that ecological considera-tions should be taken into account as early as possible in theformulation of policies for land-use and, indeed, in for-mulating national goals. The proceedings of the meetingwill be published in English by IUCN.Immediately after the regional meeting the IndonesianPlanning Agency convened a meeting, which was attendedby representatives of various Indonesian Governmentagencies, to discuss the guidelines evolved by the regionalmeeting. B. P. Desert Biome, and the American Institute ofBiological Sciences. Organized by Neil F. Hadley, it wasdivided into four sections, two being held on 18 June andthe remaining two on the next day. They may be sum-marized as follows:(i) Desert plants and dry heat (B. Strain, presiding).After a brief introduction by N. F. Hadley (Arizona StateUniversity, Tempe), D. T. Patten (Arizona State University)spoke on energy flux and the thermal regime of desertplants, emphasizing the extraordinary amount of heatreflected by the spines of the Cholla Cactus (Opuntiabigelovii) and the importance of leaf orientation tothe absorption of radiation. O. L. Lange (UniversitatWiirzburg, West Germany) then described the adaptationsof Negev desert lichens to drought and extreme temper-ature, and explained why high humidity at night enableslichens to become physiologically activated so that photo-synthesis can occur during the early hours of the morning.M.
