174 Environmental ConservationRoundtable on Environmental Information and DocumentationOn 25 February 1993, the IUCN Library hosted aRoundtable on Environmental Information andDocumentation in the greater-Geneva area. Organized incooperation with the International Academy of theEnvironment, the meeting brought together librarians andinformation managers from 32 intergovernmental, non-governmental, and Swiss, institutions — among them twomembers of the IUCN family: Intercooperation (Switzer-land) and the World Organization of the Scout Movement.During the lively discussion at the Roundtable it wasdecided to start work on a number of cooperative acti-vities: creation of a Directory of Regional InformationSources, development of a Reseau d'alerte sur la litte-rature de la biodiversite en langue frangaise, and inves-tigation of suitable thesauri for indexing environmentaland sustainable-development literature. Asmigration pressures continue to rise, immigrant-receivingcountries' search for control is becoming more and moreurgent. Unemployment, overburdened social pro-grammes, housing shortages, overpopulation, environ-mental degradation, political upheaval, and the quest forEuropean unity, are among the factors that have led manynations to rethink their immigration policies. Despitelimited steps in Europe, there is a conspicuous lack ofcooperation and information exchange among nations onwhich immigration will inevitably have a significanteconomic, social, and political, impact.A new comparative study, Immigration and Nationa-lity Policies of Leading Migration Nations, published bythe Center for Immigration Studies, examines past andcurrent migration policies of eleven countries and effortsby the European Community to harmonize immigrationpolicy. It is a compendium of individual country reports,edited by the undersigned, in which each country reportincludes detailed information on immigration law, immi-grant numbers and categories, illegal immigration, enfor-cement, immigrant rights, and naturalization policy. It isavailable from the address below at $18 post-paid.This compilation identifies many of the common issueson which increasingly heated national migration debatesare focused, and it points out disparities as well. ManyEuropean countries have come to recognize that migrationpresents them with a continental problem requiring a multi-lateral, European approach. Even before violent attacksagainst aliens began in Germany, most Western Europeancountries were experiencing a backlash against largenumbers of resident aliens — legal as well as illegal. Whileattempting to stem the migrant flow, Germany, France,Italy, Spain, and others, have also adopted policies to les-sen social unrest by encouraging the assimilation of legalresidents into the national culture. The United States, onthe other hand, has ignored the role which immigrationplays in social strife and moved towards ever-largernumbers of immigrants.The compendium is the first part of an ongoing projectof the Center for Immigration Studies. It includes reportson Argentina, Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy,Mexico, Spain, Sweden, the United Kingdom, and theUnited States — all of which are major immigrant-sendingor -receiving countries.
