The past few years havewitnessed the rapid growth of research areas that employelectrochemical principles and methods, including batteries,supercapacitors, solar cells, fuel cells, electrolyzers, carbondioxide reduction, nitrogen reduction, and organic electrosyn-thesis, to just name a few. As such, there has been an expansionin the number of papers reporting electrochemical testing andcharacterization. Publications reporting electrochemistry-re-lated experiments have become prevalent in many ACSjournals including, but not limited to, ACS Applied Materialsand Interfaces, ACS Catalysis, ACS Energy Letters, ACSMeasurement Science Au, ACS Organic & Inorganic Au, Journalof the American Chemical Society, Organic Letters, The Journal ofOrganic Chemistry, and The Journal of Physical Chemistry. Therehave been a variety of guidelines and checklists developed forsome of the experimental protocols required for characterizingspecific technologies (e.g., rotating ring disk electrochemistrymeasurements for oxygen reduction electrocatalysis andisotope experiments for nitrogen reduction to ammoniatesting). However, no guidelines are available for thepresentation of characterization data from general electro-chemical measurements. This lack of standardization hasresulted in papers being published with insufficient details forreaders to reliably replicate the experiments. To outline bestpractices, we have developed a set of guidelines for reportingelectrochemical experimentation and characterization in ACSjournals. These guidelines, similar to the existing ACSguidelines for reporting NMR data and X-ray crystallographydata for chemical compound and materials characterization,can be found on our ACS Research Data Guidelines website.1The guidelines for reporting electrochemical data are split intotwo sections: guidelines for reporting voltammetry andamperometry measurements, and guidelines for reportingbulk electrolysis procedures.We developed this set of guidelines to be agnostic to theapplication, focusing on the information needed to reproducethe electrochemical data.1 For instance, cyclic voltammetry is acommon electroanalytical technique used in applications frombiosensors to electrocatalysis to organic electrosynthesis;however, there are multiple notations used for cyclicvoltammograms, as well as conditions and parameters suchas the reference electrode (identity and concentration),working electrode (material and surface area), electrolyte(identity and concentration), method of IR correction, andscan rate. Likewise, bulk electrolyses are frequently carried outin energy and synthetic applications for the identification ofproducts and preparation of materials, and the variousparameters important to the success of these experiments,including vessel design (volume, one-compartment vs two-compartment cell construction), electrodes, and type ofelectrolysis (constant current, potential, or cell voltage),should be detailed in a manner similar to how a procedureshould be presented for organic synthesis or materialfabrication. These guidelines for electrochemical data willenable the presentation of all necessary information to thereader so they can understand, reproduce, and referencereported procedures. We also emphasize the importance ofproviding all experimental conditions in figure captions andnot just in Supporting Information/experimental sections.We hope these new guidelines will support authors in thepreparation of their electrochemical data for publication asthey apply to all ACS journals, and help readers by making dataclear, concise, and more readily reproducible.
