Malaria tijdens de zwangerschap is een belangrijke oorzaak van ziekte en sterfte bij moeder en kind. Kelias Msyamboza deed onderzoek naar de bestrijding van malaria in Malawi tijdens de zwangerschap. In Afrika ten zuiden van de Sahara is de beschikbaarheid en het gebruik van drie effectieve interventies gericht op preventie en beheersing van malaria tijdens de zwangerschap, lager dan de aanbevolen zestig procent. Het gaat om de preventieve behandeling met sulfadoxine-pyrimethamine (IPTp-SP), casemanagement en controle van de mug (met insecticide geïmpregneerde bednetten of binnenshuis gebruik van een spray). Een aanvullende aanpak met betrekking tot levering, monitoring en evaluatie kan leiden tot verbetering van de beschikbaarheid en het gebruik van deze interventies, met name IPTp-SP
