Jac. van der Zaag deed onderzoek naar de diagnose, de etiologie en de behandelingsmethoden van slaapbruxisme Bruxisme is een bewegingsstoornis van het kauwstelsel die onder andere wordt gekenmerkt door tandenknarsen en klemmen. Het treedt zowel op gedurende de dag (waakbruxisme) als tijdens de slaap (slaapbruxisme). Tandartsen worden regelmatig geconfronteerd met patiënten met problemen die mogelijk gerelateerd zijn aan bruxisme, zoals ernstige gebitsslijtage in de vorm van attritie (mechanische slijtage als gevolg van kauwen of parafunctionele activiteit), temporomandibulaire (kaakgewricht) pijn, kauwspierhypertrofie (waarbij de kauwspier groter wordt) en breuk van gebitsrestauraties of zelfs van tandheelkundige implantaten. Van der Zaag laat zien dat er een sterke associatie is tussen slaapbruxisme, periodieke beenbewegingen tijdens de slaap (PLMS) en EEG-arousals (kortdurende hersenactivaties). Mogelijk hebben zij een gemeenschappelijk onderliggend neurofysiologische mechanisme. Van der Zaag beoordeelde ook de effectiviteit van zogeheten occlusale stabilisatieopbeetplaten (splints) bij de behandeling van slaapbruxisme. Hij concludeert dat de afwezigheid van significante groepseffecten bij de behandeling van slaapbruxisme aangeeft dat voorzichtigheid is geboden wanneer splints worden geadviseerd, behalve wanneer ze worden gebruikt als bescherming tegen gebitsslijtage. He finished his high school in Haarlem and started his dental school in 1983. In 1988 he graduated from dental school and started to work as a university teacher at the Academic centre for dentistry Amsterdam (ACTA). Here he got his education as a TMD-specialist. From 1993 until 2000 he was the clinical head of the CMD-section. From 2004 till 2007 he was the overall clinical head of the department of oral Function (oral Kinesiology, oral Implantology and Prosthetic dentistry). Since January 2007 he is the head of the master profile for restorative dentistry at ACTA. At this moment he is the clinical head of all the student clinics at ACTA.  Besides his PhD research, Jacques takes part in patient care and many education programs on the field of restorative dentistry, neurophysiology, differential diagnostics and pharmacology.  He finished an post-initial Msc. in higher medical management at the free University (VU) department of Economics and Business administration.  He gives many presentations nationally and internationally and publishes on a regular basis on the field of bruxism, orofacial pain and function and restorative dentistry. For sixteen years he has had his own private practice in the city-centre of Amsterdam together with two other colleagues, with special interests towards restorative dentistry and endodontics. Since 2007 he is an advisor on restorative dentistry, oral-facial pain and management in some other private practices.   He is a member of the Dutch Society of Gnathology and Prosthetic Dentistry (NVGPT) and the Society of Oral Physiology (Store-Kro).    165
