LOFAR is een volgende-generatie-radiotelescoop die bestaat uit duizenden antennes, gegroepeerd in stations en verspreid over Noord-Nederland, Duitsland, Frankrijk, Engeland en Zweden. Samen vormen zij een telescoop die op tijdschalen vanaf een seconde ongekende gevoeligheden en resoluties behaalt. Een supercomputer en speciaal hiervoor ontworpen computercluster maken dit mede mogelijk. De enorme en continue datastromen die door de telescoop geproduceerd worden, kunnen niet langer handmatig worden geanalyseerd, maar vragen om een geautomatiseerde verwerking. Bart Scheers onderzocht wat de te verwachte omvang van de data is, hoeveel radiobronnen worden waargenomen wordt en welke typen databases geschikt zijn om alle metingen te bewaren en op te vragen. Hiervoor stelde hij enkele algoritmes op waarmee hij in staat is om vergankelijke en veranderlijke radiobronnen in de datastromen te detecteren. Met deze methoden kan Scheers tevens LOFAR-bronnen vergelijken met bronnen in catalogi van andere golflengten, om een zo compleet mogelijk inzicht van de radiobronnen te krijgen. Hij vond met de Westerbork-radiotelescoop acht bronnen met variabele helderheid van nog onbekende aard. Uit de analyse van periodieke uitbarstingen van een nog onbekende radiobron in het Melkwegcentrum en een grote uitbarsting van een neutronenster met een zeer sterk magneetveld blijkt dat LOFAR deze typen veranderlijke bronnen kan waarnemen
