イギリス文学と「慈善」 : Howards End試論

This article looks at how charity and philanthropy are described in English novels from the early nineteenth century to the beginning of twentieth century. Taking up several novels by well-known authors, it attempts to show that charitable or philanthropic acts are depicted with increasingly skeptical eyes from the mid-nineteenth century onward. The article then focuses on E. M. Forster’s Howards End (1910) and examines the Schlegel sisters’ attitude toward their lower-middle class friend, Leonard Bast. Their idea about how to help him marks a departure from the Victorian, philanthropic view of the poor and reflects the new ideas of the Liberal welfare reformers. However, the sisters’ effort to keep Leonard from falling into misery does not end in success.
