In 1986 behaalde hij het VWO B diploma aan de Kees Boeke scholengemeenschap te Bilthoven. Vanaf 1986 studeerde hij Medische Biologie aan de Rijksuniversiteit Utrecht, met stages in de immuno-logie bij de vakgroep Infectieziekten van de faculteit Diergeneeskunde (dr. W. van Eeden), en de vakgroep Pathologie van de faculteit Geneeskunde (dr. R. de Weger) en een hoofdvak stage in de moleculaire biologie bij de afdeling Moleculaire Genetica van het Nederlands Kanker Instituut (Prof dr. A. Berns). In augustus 1992 behaalde hij het doctoraal examen Medische Biologie (cum laude). Vanaf december 1992 was hij werkzaam als onderzoeker in opleiding bij de afdeling Moleculaire Biologie van het Nederlands Kanker Instituut. Onder begeleiding van Prof dr. R H.A. Plasterk werd het in dit proefschrift beschreven onderzoek verricht. Dit onderzoek naar de functie van G eiwit gekoppelde signaal transductie in C. elegans werd gefinancierd met een beurs van de Human Frontier Science Organization. Op 19 januari 1998 ontving hij voor zijn onderzoek de Antoni van Leeuwenhoek prijs. Vanaf december 1998 is hij werkzaam bij de vakgroep Immunologie van de faculteit Geneeskunde van de Rijksuniversiteit Utrecht. In de groep van Prof. dr. H. Clevers verricht hij onderzoek naar de functie van TCF transcriptie factoren 77
