The medical and scientific activities ofSpanish nephrologists related to kidney transplantation havebeen very important for many years, and the S.E.N. mustdirect, stimulate and lead this activity.2. EXPLICIT DEFINITION OF OBJECTIVES (GENERALAND SPECIFIC) TO COVERSENTRA’s main purpose is to promote access to kidneytransplantations to patients with advanced chronic kidneydisease and advance in the care of kidney transplantedpatients. Specifically, the activities will focus on: Promoting activities of high scientific interest in thegeneration of evidence and value in the area of kidneydonation and kidney transplantation: clinical trials,observational studies, systematic revisions, guidelinesand recommendations.2 Promoting first class training activities that focus onkidney transplantation learning for nephrologists, both inthe context of the annual S.E.N. Conference and in othermeetings, as well as through its online platform. Extending, both to nephrologists and other healthprofessionals and society in general, initiatives to overcomebarriers, inequalities, and ethical issues and in general,anything that might prevent more extensive access with thebest possible results in renal transplant both from living anddeceased donors in all their possible forms.3T he Board of Directors of the Spanish Society of Nephrol-ogy (S.E.N.) approved at its ordinary meeting of 18 De-cember 2012 the creation of a Transplantation WorkingGroup (SENTRA). GENERAL SCIENTIFIC INTEREST, MEDICALINTEREST AND HEALTH INTEREST OF THE ISSUEPROPOSED FOR STUDYMore than half of patients with advanced chronic kidney disease requiring replacement therapy in Spain are kidneytransplantation patients, and as such, it is unquestionable thattransplants are a priority work and knowledge generationarea for all nephrologists. Transplantation Group of the S.E.N.Nefrologia 2013;33(2):160-3 Improving collaboration between S.E.N. members,other S.E.N. working groups and other scientificsocieties related to kidney transplantation, mainly theSpanish Society of Transplantation, the Spanish Societyof Immunology, the Spanish Association of Urologyand its Transplantation Working Group, the EuropeanDialysis and Transplantation Association and itsTransplantation Working Group, the European Societyfor Organ Transplantation, the American Society ofNephrology, the American Society of Transplantationand the Transplantation Society. Serving as a representative, always by mandate anddelegation of the S.E.N. Board of Directors in mattersrelated to transplantation that are of interest to themembers, in their relationship with bodies such as theNational Transplant Organization, as well as with otherAdministrative and social agents.The first attempt of Spanish nephrologists to work in thefield of evidence-based medicine at an institutional level inS.E.N. was the creation of its Kidney TransplantationEvidence-based Medicine Group in 2001, coordinated byJulio Pascual, whose objective was to share these tools andcarry out systematic revisions.3-6 This group definitivelyjoined that which was subsequently created in evidence-based medicine in nephrology, coordinated by CarlosQuereda.7,8 The group focuses on the generation ofknowledge in all areas of Nephrology and publishesreviews, methodological commentaries and structuredabstracts, currently in the supplements of Evidence-basedNephrology.9,10 SENTRA will actively collaborate in thesetype of activities.In recent years, various professional groups have joinedforces to generate initiatives and knowledge in the area oftransplantation in Spain. In the 1990s, led by José M.Morales, a first S.E.N. Renal Transplant group was created,which carried out major collaborative activities during thatdecade. Subsequently, the Renal Forum groups, sponsoredby Astellas, were developed and continue to be productive,11,12 as well as the Chronic Nephropathy Transplant Group,sponsored by Wyeth and coordinated by Daniel Serón, whichsince its inception has produced some of the studies andpublications of most interest and impact carried out bySpanish renal transplant nephrologists.13-17 In 2000, ATOS(Solid Organ Transplant Clinic) was created. It is sponsoredby the company Roche and includes Spanish experts intransplantation of various solid organs who meet annually todisseminate knowledge on the most diverse topics related tothis area, whose scope goes beyond kidney transplantation.In recent years, and before the creation of the SpanishSociety of Transplantation, it was the most stable tool forcollaboration between transplant professionals of variousbodies.18 In an attempt to analyse the evidence availableregarding the metabolic disorders after renal transplant andreach a consensus over their management, the PrometheusGroup, was established in 2007, also sponsored by Roche,which includes a renal transplant nephrologist for eachTransplantation Unit of our country and which is coordinatedby Dr Manuel Arias and Dr Josep M ª Campistol.19,20 Thegroup meets annually after continuous work on a particulartopic and is advised by non-nephrologist experts andspecialists in evidence-based medicine. The Spanish Groupin Transplantation Actions (GREAT), which was establishedin 2006 and is coordinated by Sofía Zárraga and AnaSánchez-Fructuoso and sponsored by the company Astellasis developing collaborative projects of special interest andinternational impact.21,22 SENTRA, as an official S.E.N.Working Group, as well as developing its own strategy, willfacilitate the development of open projects that can begenerated within all of these collaborative groups, with theaim of integrating and complementing, in compliance withthe institutional objectives of the S.E.N.3. ESTABLISHMENT OF A DETAILED ACTION PLANTHAT INCLUDES MEANS TO BE USED, RESOURCESAVAILABLE AND THE ACTION SCHEDULEDuring the first months of 2013, a SENTRA developmentprocess will begin: firstly its coordinating committee will beestablished (two coordinators and eight additional members),who will meet to design the action plan, targets andschedule. SENTRA will immediately be open to all memberswho are interested in taking part in it; the only requirement isto be members of the S.E.N. and after having made adeclaration of interest to participate in the activities andinitiatives of the group. The SENTRA coordinatingcommittee will initiate fluid communication immediatelywith members of the S.E.N. to facilitate their incorporationinto the group and its activities, at various levels ofcommitment that its members establish freely in each case.4. NO CONFLICT OF INTEREST WITH OTHERWORKING GROUPS OF THE S.E.N.Although it has been said that in Spain there are variouscollaborative groups working in the area of kidneytransplantation, there is no similar institutional operatinggroup in the Society that is open to 100% of itsmembers.In accordance with the Regulations for creating workinggroups, “the Board of Directors will determine theappointment of the members of each working groupfrom among the S.E.N. members who voluntarily decideto join and participate in it. With this aim, the Board ofDirectors will be guided by the sole criterion that theelected members possess an unquestionable professionaland scientific career in the relevant area of the workinggroup.”1 SENTRA’s initial coordinators are Drs Josep Mªeditorials162Julio Pascual et al. The coordinating committee will meet byteleconference at least once every 3 months and in personat least once a year, in order to promote the targetsproposed. This arrangement will remain in place for 3years and in June 2016, one of the coordinators will bereplaced along with four members of the coordinatingcommittee, and in June 2019, the remainder, in order thatthe total renewal occurs in 6 years.SENTRA will have a website to develop its outreach,communication and training activities and will workclosely with the Board of Directors, the SenefroFoundation, the grupo editorial Nefrología and theTechnical Secretary of the S.E.N.Conflicts of interestThe authors declare that they have no conflicts of interestrelated to the contents of this article.
