Mining Photographs and Other Pictures : A Selection from the Negative Archives of Shedden Studio, Glace Bay, Cape Breton, 1948-1968

Abstract

Wilkie contextualizes the publication of the Shedden Archive (consisting of commissions by Dominion Steel and Coal Corporation and the general Cape Breton community), providing background on the Studio and its principal patron, DOSCO. Macgillivray examines the history and unsavoury reputation of the Glace Bay region and its population. Sekula compiles a comprehensive portrait of the photographic archive and the technical image, illustrating the relationship between photographic culture and economic life, the development of capitalism, narrative history, and the medium's base in science and art. Three appendices include a glossary of mining terms and a map of Nova Scotia. Circa 200 bibl. ref
