described in Section 3, the results of unpublished ex- periments [*01, and knowledge of the results of UV ir- radiation suggest the following possibilities c1361: i) A “direct hit” by the radiation can lead to irrep- arable breakdown of the nucleic acid molecule. ii) The breakdown of one strand of the DNA double strand can in certain circumstances (depending on the nature of the break) be repaired by a mechanism cor- responding to enzymatic reactivation. iii) The addition of water (via H and HO radicals) to the cytosine portion of the DNA leads to a change in the base pairing during the reduplication of the DNA; this could lead inter alia to the mutations resulting from ionizing radiation. iv) The biological importance of other products [peroxides, dihydrothymine, dihydrouracil, thymine glycols, etc. (see Schemes 3 and 4)] formed on irradia- tion is largely unknown. It is necessary to consider both blockage of the reduplication of the DNA at the modified base and the modification of the genetic [136] See W. C. Summers and W. Schopf on the occasion of his 70th birthday Li-, K- and [(CH3)4N] cyclononatetraenides ( I )  111 are the only monocyclic derivatives of the hypothetical cyclonona- tetraene that have been isolated so far [21. Nonafulvenes, being cross-conjugated 10 x electron systems and homologs of the fulvenes, are of particular interest. Like the fulvene and isobenzofulvene systems (31, nonafulvenes should also be stabi- lized by electron-donating substituents on the exocyclic C- atom. The successful synthesis of 10,1O-bis(dimethylamino)- nonafulvene (4)  confirms this presumption. + 1 MCL Compound ( I ) ,  M = Li, reacts with N,N.N’,N-tetramethyl- chloroformamidinium chloride (2) [41 at -70 OC in tetra- hydrofuran to give the so far non-isolable cyclonona- tetraene derivative (31, which, in the presence of an excess of (/), is rapidly converted into the nonafulvene ( 4 )  as yellow crystals that are sensitive to light and air [yield 7%; m.p. 109-110 OC (from ethanol)] [51. In addition, 3aJa-dihydro- indenel61 is formed as a result of protonation of ( I )  and sub- sequent valence isomerization of the cyclononatetraene thus formed. Elemental analysis and molecular weight determina- tion confirm the constitution of ( 4 j ;  its configuration, how- ever, has not yet been elucidated 171. During quantitative microhydrogenation, compound (4) takes up H2 in amounts calculated for five double bonds. The mass spectrum of (4) shows several, but uncharacteristic, fragmentation peaks in addition to the molecular peak m/e = 216. UV and N M R  spectra of ( 4 )  indicate the presence of a tem- perature- and solvent-dependent conformational equilibrium. In n-hexane a t  room temperature, compound ( 4 )  absorbs at  330 nm (log E = 4.34). whereas in methylene chloride it ab- sorbs at  403 (3.90), 340 (4.05). 298 (4.05), and 244 (4.28) nm (log E ) .  and in tetrahydrofuran at 334 (4.19) and a t  240 (4.15) nm [log E). Although the UV spectrum of (4) in n-hexane remains unchanged at  low temperatures, in methylene chlo- ride the extinction of the bands a t  403,296, and 244 increases whereas the absorption maximum of the band at 340 de- creases; a t  -8OOC that at  340 disappears. [A,,, at 0°C: 403 (3.9), 340 (4.0), 296 (4.1), 244 (4.3); at -35 ‘C: 403 (3.9), 296 (4.2), 244 (4.4); at -80 OC [7al: 403 (4.1), 294 (4.4). 244 (4.7) nm (log E)]. At lower tempera- tures the multiplet of the ring protons is shifted to lower field with diminution of the fine structure, while the singlet of the methyl protons is split into a doublet (coales- cence point: cu. -53'C). This may be ascribed to either restricted rotation of the C-N bonds or formation of an un- symmetrical conformation of the nine-membered ring relative to the dimethylamino groups at low temperaturesrsl. The temperature-dependent changes in the NMR and UV spectra of ( 4 )  are reversible. (5) As a derivative of the hypothetical cyclononatetraene, com- pound (4 )  undergoes an irreversible thermal valence iso- merization in benzene, slowly at  room temperature but rapidly at  60 'C, to give the 3a.7a-dihydroindene derivative (5) [yield 50%; yellow oil, sensitive to oxygen; b.p. 80 "C/ 0.003 torr; UV spectrum (in n-hexane): 302 (4.17). 270 (4.12). 260 (4.06) nm (log E); NMR spectrum (in CDCl3); doublet centered a t  7 = 7.34 (4CH3), multiplets centered at  7 = 6.17 (H-3a, H-7a), at 4.55 (H-2, H-3, H-4, H-5, H-6), and at 3.65 (H-7)]. The NMR spectrum of (5) does not provide sufficient data for a differentiation between the cis and trans isomer. Oxidation of (5) with active lead dioxide [91 leads to the forma- tion of 6,6-bis(dimethylamino)benzo[b]fulvene [I-(tetramethyl- diaminomethy1ene)indenel (6),  which can also be prepared from sodium indenide (7) and bis(dimethy1amino)ethoxy- carbonium fluoroborate (8) [yellow crystals, sensitive to light, m.p. 55 'C; UV spectrum (in n-hexane): 375 (4.36), 279 (4.08), 255 (3.96) nm (log E ) ;  NMR spcctrum (in CDC13): singlet at T = 6.99 (4CH3), AB system at 7 = 3.32 and 3.42 (2H) (JAB = 5 Hz), multiplet centered at  7 = 2.75 (4 ben- zenoid H)]. Geburtstag gewidmei Mit Ausnahme des Li-, K- und [(CH3)4N]-Cyclononatetra- enids (I) [ I ]  wurden bisher keine monocyclischen Derivate des hypothetischen Cyclononatetraens isoliert [21. Nonaful- venen kommt als gekreuzt konjugierten lox-Elektronensy- stemen und Homologen der Fulvene besonderes Interesse zu. Gleich dem Fulven- und Isobenzofulvensystem 131 sollten auch Nonafulvene durch elektronenspendende Substituenten amzexocyclischen C-Atom stabilisiert werden. Die Synthese des lO,lO-Bis(dimethylamino)nonafulvens (4 )  bestatigt diese Vermutung. (I), M = Li, reagiert mit N,N,N',N'-Tetramethyl-chlorform- amidiniumchlorid (2) [41 bei -70 OC in Tetrahydrofuran zu dem bisher nicht isolierten Cyclononatetraen-Derivat (3) ,  + (3) l7 1 (4) [ I  1 das in Gegenwart von uberschussigem (I) rasch das Nona- fulven (4 )  als licht- und luftempfindliche gelbe Kristalle vom Fp = 109-110°C (aus Athanot) in 7-prOZ. Ausbeute lie- fertW Daneben wird durch Protonierung von (I) und an- schlieSende Valenzisomerisierung des dabei resultierenden Cyclononatetraens 3a,7a-Dihydro-inden [61 gebildet. Elemen- taranalyse und Molekulargewichtsbestimmung bestatigen die Konstitution von (4 ) ,  dessen Konfiguration jedoch noch nicht geklart werden konnte 171. Bei der quantitativen Mikro- hydrierung (20 "C, 760 Torr. H2/Pd nimmt (4)  die fur fiunf Doppelbindungen berechnete H2-Menge auf. Das Massen- spektrum von ( 4 )  zeigt neben der Molekiilspitze m/e = 216 mehrere, jedoch uncharakteristische Bruchstiickspitzen. UV- und NMR-Spektren von ( 4 )  weisen auf temperatur- und lbsungsmittelabhangige Konformerengleichgewichte hin. Bei Raumtemperatur absorbiert (4 )  in n-Hexan bei 330 nm (log E = 4.34), in Methylenchlorid dagegen bei 403 (3.90). 340 (4.05), 298 (4.05) und 244 (4.28) nm (log E )  und in Tetrahydro- furan bei 334 (4.19) sowie 240 (4.15) nm (log c). Wahrend sich das UV-Spektrum von (4) in n-Hexan bei Erniedrigung der Temperatur nicht verandert, nimmt in Methylenchlorid die Extinktion der Banden bei 403, 296 und 244 nm zu, die des Absorptionsmaximums bei 340 nm da- gegen ab; bei -80 OC ist diese Bande nicht mehr zu beobach- ten [Amax bei O°C: 403 (3.9). 340 (4.0). 296 (4.1), 244 (4.3); -35 "C: 403 (3.9), 296 (4.2). 244 (4.4); -8OoC[7al: 403 (4.1), 294 (4.4). 244 (4.7) nm (log E)].  In Tetrahydrofuran treten unterhalb O°C nvei zusatzliche Maxima bei 404 und 296 nm auf, deren Intensitat bei Erniedrigung der Tem- peratur zunimmt [Amax bei -35 OCt7al: 404 (3.8). 335 (4.1), 296 (4.1). 244 (4.4); -8OOC: 404 (4.1), 335 (4.0), 296 (4.3), 244 (4.6) nm (log c)]. Das NMR-Spektrum von (4) (in CD2C12) (Abb. 1) bei 35 OC z i g t  neben einem komplizierten Multiplett der acht Ring- protonen zwischen T = 3.63 und 4.67 ein scharfes Singulett bei T = 7.22 fur die zwblf Methylprotonen. Verminderung der Feinstruktur nach niedrigeren Feldstarken verschoben, wahrend das Singulett der Methylprotonen in ein Dublett aufspaltet (Koaleszenzpunkt: ca. -53 "C). Dies diirfte entweder auf eine Behinderung der Rotation der C-N-Bindungen oder aber auf die Bildung einer zu den Dimethylaminogruppen unsymmetrischen Konfor- mation des neungliedrigen Rings bei tiefer Temperatur zu- riickzufiihren sein 181. Die temperaturabhangigen Anderun- gen der NMR- und UV-Spektren von (4) sind reversibel. Als Derivat des hypothetischen Cyclononatetraens unter- liegt (4)  in benzolischer Lbsung bei 20°C sehr langsam, bei 60 OC dagegen rasch einer irreversiblen thermischen Valenz- isomerisierung zum 3a,7a-Dihydro-inden-Derivat (5) [Aus- beute 50%; gelbes, sauerstoffempfindliches 61 vom Kp = 564 Angew. Martens[*] Cyclononatetraene werden als mbgliche Zwischenstufen bei der thermischen und pho tochemischen Valenzisomerisierung von cis-Bicyclo[6.1.0]nona-2,4,6-trien sowie mehreren 9- oder 9,9'-substituierten cis-Bicyclo[6.1.0]nona-2,4,6-trienen in cis- und tranr-Bicyclo[4.3.O]nona-2,4,7-triene (cis- und trans-Dihydroindme) diskutiert [I]. Auch bei der Protonie- rung und Methylierung des Cyclononatetraenyl-Anions (I) nimmt man cis,cis,cis,cis-l,3,5,7-Cyclononatetraen [IS] (2) bzw. 9-Methyl-cis,cis,cis,cis-l,3,5,7-Cyclononatetraen~~~~ als nicht fal3bare Primarprodukte an. King und Stone[zl geben an, daB die bei der Umsetzungvon Dihydroinden rnit Cr(C0)6, MO(CO)~ und W(CO)6 in geringer Ausbeute erhaltenen Tri- carbonylmetallkomplexe wahrscheinlich cis,trans,cis,frans- 1,3,5,7-Cyclononatetraen als olefinischen Liganden enthalten. Wie wir fanden, entsteht hellgelbes cis,cis.cis,cis-l,3,5,7- Cyclononatetraen (2) in guter Ausbeute. wenn das Kalium- salz (I) rnit 0.1 N Essigsaure bei 0 "C protoniert wird. (3) (2) enthiilt stets 2-4% cis-Dihydroinden (3). das sich wohl bei der Aufarbeitung und Destillation bei 0 "C bildet. Der chemische Strukturbeweis fur (2) ergibt sich aus der Art der Herstellung, aus der katalytischen Hydrierung unterhalb 0 "C, die zu Cyclononan fuhrt, und aus der praktisch quanti- tativen Valenzisomerisierung zu (3) 131. Die Halbwertszeit der nach der ersten Ordnung verlaufenden Umlagerung (2)  + (3 )  betragt bei 35 "C 16 min; die zwischen 18 "C und 35 "C ermittelten Aktivierungsparameter haben folgende Werte: AH+ = 19.8 & 1 kcal/mol, AS* = -10.4 cal . grad-1 mol-1. Orbitalsymmetrie-uberlegungen [4151 lassen fur das stark gespannte (2) einen leichten disrotatorischen RingschluD der Art 6x + 4x + 2a zu (3) erwarten. Des weiteren reagiert (2) rnit Kalium-tert.-butanolat in Tetrahydrofuran unterhalb 0°C zu (I) zuriick. Die spektroskopischen Befunde bestatigen die Struktur (2). Das Kernresonanzspektrum (in CCl4) zeigt die erwarteten Absorptionsbanden der acht olefinischen Protonen (Multiplett mit intensivem Signal bei T - 4.28) und der beiden CH2- Protonen (verbreitertes Triplett bei T = 6.95, scheinbare Kopplungskonstante J = 5.5 Hz). Im IR-Spektrum (in CCl4) findet man die wenig intensive und verbreiterte Absorptions- bande der C= C-Valenzschwingungen bei 1632 cm-1. wahrend die nichtebenen C-H-Defonnationsschwingungen der cis- Doppelbindungen durch eine Bande bei 700 cm-1 nachge- wiesen werden. Im Bereiche der C-H-Deformationsschwin- gungen der trans-Doppelbindung findet keine wesentliche Absorption statt. Das UV-Spektrum von (2) (in khanol) ist ungewahnlich fur ein Tetraen mit vier alternierenden Doppel- bindungen, hat jedoch Ahnlichkeit mit demjenigen des Cy- clooctatetraens 16971: bis 2100 A zeigt es lediglich einen An- stieg der Extinktion nach kurzeren Wellenlangen hin mit einer Schulter bei 2450A (Q = 2600). Ein Absorptions- maximum tritt nicht auf. Das Spektnun ist vereinbar mit einer relativ starren Wannenkonfiguration von (2), in der be- nachbarte Doppelbindungen nicht in Konjugation treten. Die Umsetzung von (2) mit Silbernitrat in Wasser bei 0°C fiihrt zu einem 1 :2-Komplex, Fp - 86-88 'C. DaB (2) im Komplex als Ligand vorliegt. wurde durch Verdrangung des Cycloolehs rnit wal3rigern Ammoniak bei 0 "C nachgewiesen ; man erhalt reines (2) zuriick. Auch das NMR-Spektrum des Komplexes (aufgenommen in DzO bei 0°C) weist (2) als Liganden aus. Es zeigt die gegeniiber freiem (2) verschobenen Signale der acht Olefinprotonen (Multiplett, zentriert um 7 - 3.6) und der beiden Methylenprotonen (Multiplett, zen- triert um 7 = 6.64). Die thermische Umlagerung von cis-Bicyclo[6.l .O]nona-2,4,6- trien fuhrt zu cis- und trans-Dihydroinden im VerhPltnis 9:1 [lal ~ C I  1hI. Synchrone Ringoffnung und synchroner Ring- schluB sollten uber das hochgespannte cis,cis,cis,trans-l,3.5,7- Cyclononatetraen zu trans-Dihydroinden fuhren [415]. Die Fragen, ob auch (2) als Zwischenstufe auftritt und rasch zu (3) isomerisiert und wie es zur Bildung von (2) k o m t ,  sind noch zu klaren. IZ 8bl Eingegangen am 10. Juni 1969 [*I Dr. G.
