Claude Simard

Abstract

Godmer’s analysis of Simard’s works produced between 1991-98 focuses on the paradoxical relationship between content (the artist’s childhood/adolescence in rural Quebec) and context (Simard now lives and works in New York). Godmer also discusses the artist’s craft-like forms and minimalist style. Issues of identity, politics and religion are considered, as well as the spectator’s physical interaction with the work.
