John P. McGovern Historical Collections and Research Center, HoustonAcademy of Medicine­Texas Medical Center LibraryBiographical NoteJames H. Steele, DVM, was born in Chicago on April 13, 1913. He earned his Doctor of Veterinary Medicinedegree from Michigan State and a Master of Public Health from Harvard University. Steele started theveterinary division of the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention in 1947. In the 1950s, Steele leddevelopment of rabies vaccinations and preventive medicine programs at both the federal and state levels. Hetraveled to over 60 countries to establish international veterinary public health services. He also served as theUnited States’ first assistant surgeon general for veterinary affairs in 1968 and then served as the deputyassistant secretary for health and human services in 1970. In 1971, Steele became a professor at the Universityof Texas School of Public Health in Houston, TX, a role he kept until his retirement in 1983.Scope and Contents NoteThe James H. Steele DVM, MPH papers (MS104) is 55 cubic feet and consists of 137 documents boxes,VHS, audiocassettes and 1 oversize photo. It contains biographical information, personal and professionalcorrespondence, lectures, certificates and awards, topical research files, newsclippings, photographs,audiovisual materials, collected books and publications, and other realia that detail the personal life,professional activities, and leadership of James H. Steele during his time at the Centeres of Dissease Controland Prevention, as a professor at the University of Texas School of Public Health in Houston, TX, as AssistantSurgeon General, and his retirement. The materials are in good condition.RestrictionsAccess Restrictions5/16/2017
