While traditional WSNs (e.g., thosefor smart vineyard) have gone from research to real-world deployments, WSNs continue evolving along multipledimensions such as content, mobility, space, and architecture.For instance, wireless multimedia sensor networks, mobilewireless sensor networks, wireless underwater sensor net-works, wireless underground sensor networks, and wirelesssensor-actuator networks are being explored to extendWSNsfor supporting rich-media sensing, mobile sensing, under-water/underground sensing, and closed-loop sensing andcontrol. These new WSNs will significantly expand the reachofWSNs and have far-reaching impact onWSN applications.In the meantime, they also introduce great challenges to thetheory and practice of wireless sensor networking, togetherwithThe 6th China Conference of Wireless Sensor Networks(CWSN2012) sponsored by China Computer Federation,cosponsored by China Computer Federation Technical Com-mittee on Sensor Network, and organized by Nanjing Uni-versity of Posts and Telecommunication. CWSN2012 servesas a forum for sensor network researchers, developers, andusers to communicate the productions and experience ofsensor network research and applications. Authors of selectedEnglish papers in CWSN2012 were invited to submit theirextended versions of their papers to this special issue. Also,some research articles were submitted from the manuscripttracking system as regular submissions to this special issue.This special issue aims at providing researchers and prac-titioners from the academia, industry, and government anopportunity to reflect upon these new developments ofWSNs, including their architectures, protocols, novel char-acteristics, challenges, and real-world deployments. We haveaccepted a few papers that address the state of the art and thefuture directions of these research and application areas forwireless sensor networks in this issue.The paper “Two-layer storage scheme and repair methodof failure data in wireless sensor networks” describes a two-layer distributed data storage scheme in wireless sensor net-works. The proposed storage scheme and repair method haslower repair communication overhead, which can reduce therepair communication overhead to times and is suitable forresource-constrained distributed wireless sensor networks.The paper “Target Q-coverage problem with boundedservice delay in directional sensor networks” addresses thetarget Q-coverage (TQC) problem to prolong the networklifetime with bounded service delay constraint in directionalsensor networks. A protocol to find a collection of coveragesets that satisfy the coverage quality requirement and thebounded service delay constraint is proposed, and simulationresults show that performance of this protocol is close to theupper bound of the optimal solution.The paper “A virtual-ring-based data storage and retrievalscheme in wireless sensor networks” proposes a virtual-ring-based data storage and retrieval scheme, which is called VRS,2 International Journal of Distributed Sensor Networksto take the frequencies of event and query into considerationfor wireless sensor networks. In VRS, the whole sensornetwork field is divided into some virtual rings. Accordingto the frequencies, one of the virtual rings is selected as therendezvous ring, which plays the role of a bridge between theinformation consumers and the information producers.The paper “Novel side information generation algorithmof multiview distributed video coding for multimedia sensornetworks” proposes a multiview distributed video codingalgorithm by gaining the intense motion regions of theWyner-Ziv frame according to the criteria of ROI, and fornonintense motion regions, motion compensation interpo-lation (MCI) is utilized to generate side information. Finally,side information based on fusion of temporal and spatial sideinformation will be gained.The paper “A stochastic k-coverage scheduling algorithm inwireless sensor networks” focuses on the K-coverage schedul-ing problem to guarantee coverage sensing and networkconnectivity. Deterministic and stochastic sensing models ofthe sensors were both considered and the authors adaptedthe results of deterministic sensing model to solve the sensorscheduling problem under the stochastic sensing model.Theoretical analysis and simulation results show that thisalgorithm can reduce the number of active nodes and extendthe network lifetime significantly.The paper “Truthful relay assignment for cooperative com-munication in wireless networks with selfish source-destinationpairs” aims at propose a relay assignment protocol (RA-VCG)for cooperative communication to maximize the total socialvalue while guaranteeing truthfulness in an auction-theoreticsense by charging each pair an extra payment. Simulationresults demonstrate the effectiveness of this protocol.The paper “A camera nodes correlation model based on3D sensing in wireless multimedia sensor networks” studiesthe visual information retrieved from adjacent camera nodesthat usually exhibits high levels of correlation for wirelessmultimedia sensor networks. Firstly, a correlation model isproposed by measuring the intersection area of multiplecamera nodes’ field of views. Then, cluster structures areestablished to cooperate on image processing and transmis-sion tasks. A set of experiments are performed to show theproposed network topology and image fusion, and transmis-sion scheme released the pressure of camera node greatly andreduced the network energy consumption of communicationefficiently.The paper “An open conformance test system towardsthe standardization of wireless sensor networks” analyzesIPv6-based WSN protocols and the conformance testingtechniques and methods for IPv6-based WSNs. A novelconformance test system for IPv6-based WSNs is designedand implemented, which is open, flexible, full featured, andpractical.The related outcomes will promote the standardiza-tion and commercialization of WSNs.The paper “A data gathering in opportunistic wirelesssensor networks” studies the challenging problem to effec-tively collect the sensing data in opportunistic wireless sensornetworks, and an efficient data gathering algorithm basedon location prediction is proposed for opportunistic wirelesssensor networks. Extensive experimental results show thatthe proposed algorithm is effective to reduce the messagetransmissions and improve the data collection coverage rate.The paper “Optimal convergecast scheduling limits forclustered industrial wireless sensor networks” investigates theperformance bounds of the convergecast scheduling. Firstly,by establish the lower bounds on the number of time slotsto finish the intracluster and the intercluster convergecasttransmissions. Then, the lower bounds on the number ofchannels based on the lower bounds on the number oftimeslots and maximum available channels in a multichan-nel scenario is established. Lastly, extensive analysis-takingpacket retransmissions is carried out to meet the reliabilityrequirement. Experiment results validate the correctness andtightness of theory analysis is this paper.The paper “MPD-model: a distributed multipreference-driven data fusion model and its application in a WSNs-based healthcare monitoring system” proposes a novel dis-tributed multipreference-driven data fusion model (MPD-Model) for WSNs using distributed multipreference feature-level fusion algorithm, light-weight adaptive feature extrac-tion algorithm, and SVM-based algorithm for health statusdetection tasks. We implement the proposed methods in areal wearable healthcare monitoring system and validate theproposedmethods using real-world data sets with 2046 pulsesamples. Experimental results show that the proposed MPD-Model is reasonable and effective.The paper “Probability model based coverage-enhancingalgorithm for WSNs of nodes’ adjustable movement pattern”proposed a novel algorithm named as PRMCA (probabilitymodel based rotate or move along fixed direction coverage-enhancing algorithm), which determines whether the sensornode rotates or moves along a fixed direction according tothe coverage effect. A set of simulation experiments verify theperformance of the proposed algorithm.The paper “Interference-aware fault-tolerant energy span-ner in wireless ad hoc networks” addresses the power assign-ment in wireless ad hoc networks which induced commu-nication graph that meets the following properties: (1) it isan energy-t-spanner which is energy efficient; (2) it is k-fault resistant which can withstand up to node failures; (3)the interference is minimal. Both the theoretic analysis andthe simulations in the paper prove that these algorithms caninduce a k-fault resistant energy spanner and furthermore theinterference is minimized.The paper “An adaptive opportunistic network codingmechanism in wireless multimedia sensor networks” pro-posed an adaptive opportunistic network coding mechanism(AONC) to improve video communication performance inwireless multimedia sensor networks. A novel asymmetriccoding method to improve data exchange gain is proposed,and opportunistic forwarding strategy based on dynamicpriority to achieve much higher is designed. Simulationresults demonstrate that AONC can greatly enhance videotransmission quality and efficiently utilize bandwidth andenergy resources.The paper “L-shaped-sensor-arrays-based localization andtracking method for 3D maneuvering target” analyzes local-ization and tracking technology for three-dimensional targetin wireless sensor networks. A novel closed-loop system toInternational Journal of Distributed Sensor Networks 3detect 3D maneuvering targets is designed, which firstly usesL-shaped sensor arrays to sample the signals of maneuveringtargets, then 2D ESPRIT algorithm and maximum likeli-hood algorithm are introduced to achieve the positions ofthe spatial targets; thirdly, an autoregressive (AR) particlefilter (PF) algorithm is realized to predict the locations innext moment; finally, localization process is directed bypredicted positions to form a positive feedback closed-loop.Experiment results show that robustness and accuracy oflocalization and tracking for three-dimensional targets can beenhanced using this system.The paper “Stair scheduling for data collection in wirelesssensor networks” addresses the low-tier stair schedulingmethod problem for two-tiered sensor networks. The energyand communication reliability models of stair schedulingwith respect to the size of clusters and LN parameters areanalyzed and used to optimize the tier design of the network.The simulation results show that the performances of stairscheduling are much better than that of random schedulingalgorithms.Fu XiaoRuchuan WangLimin SunQun LiHongwei ZhangLiusheng Huang
