Utilization of japanese paper in conservation and restoration of paper artefacts

Abstract

Završni rad na temu Upotreba japanskog papira u konzervaciji i restauraciji papirne građe obuhvaća teorijski i praktični dio. U teorijskom dijelu objašnjeno je što je japanski papir te kako se izrađuje. Nadalje, opisane su vrste japanskog papira te njihovo porijeklo, karakteristike, struktura vlakana, boja i mehanička svojstva. U ovom poglavlju opisani su najčešće korišteni japanski papiri. Treći dio odnosi se na samu primjenu japanskog papira u konzervatorskim i restauratorskim zahvatima kao što su ojačavanje cijelog nositelja, rukopisa, rubova te izrada integracija. Praktični dio odnosi se na konzervatorske i restauratorske metode na vrlo oštećenoj kromolitografiji. U praktičnom dijelu opisano je stanje predmeta, porijeklo, povijesno umjetnički kontekst koji obuhvaća deskripciju umjetnika, ikonografije te oznaka na predmetu, popis mogućih tretmana, prijedlog radova te same izvršene konzervatorske i restauratorske metode. S obzirom da je preventivna zaštita vrlo bitna u daljnjem očuvanju artefakta, ponuđen je i prijedlog očuvanja (vrijednosti temperature i vlage, zaštita od insekata i svjetla i dr.).The final thesis on Utilization of japanese paper in conservation and restoration of paper artefacts includes theoretical and practical part. The meaning of japanese paper and how it is made are explained in theoretical part. Futhermore, the types of japanese paper and their origin, characteristics, fiber structure, colour and mechanical features are also described. In this chapter the most commonly used japanese paper is described. Third part relates to the use of japanese paper in paper conservation and restoration such as strengthening of the paper carrier, manuscript, edges and making integrations. The practical part relates to conservation and restoration methods on badly damaged chromolithograph. This part of the thesis describes the condition of the object, its origin, artistic and historical context which includes the description of artist, iconography and labels on object, the list of possible treatments, treatment proposal and conservation and restoration practice. Since prevention is very important in the further protection of the artefact, some pieces of advices on protection have been given (the value of temperature and relative humidity, protection from insects and light...)
