For an application in UV curable coatings ahyperbranched polyester based on 4,4-bis(4'-hydroxyphenyl) pen-tanoic acid was modified with vinyl ether groups. Fast and efficientcuring could be obtained using a cationic photoinitiator and a re-active diluent. From fully aromatic hyperbranched polyesters hav-ing hydroxyl, carboxyl and acetoxy end groups thin isotropic layerswith a smooth surface could be prepared. The surface propertieswere characterized carefully by different methods. First experi-ments with exposition of these layers to different atmospheric hu-midities showed a controlled swelling and/or adsorption/deso-rption behavior in dependence on the functional groups. A key factor is theviscosity of the ceramic slip used to coat the polymeric sponges,which have to be correlated with the pore size of the sponges. De-pending on the slip viscosity, the sponge struts become more or lesscoated with the ceramic precursor, yielding finally ceramic struts ofdifferent thickness. Accordingly, ceramic foams having thickerstruts posses higher mechanical strength but produce more pres-sure drop by fluids flowing through. Until now,fluidised bed granulation processes have predominantly beenused for drying solutions and suspensions based on water. Airhas primarily been used as the heat transfer media and fluidisinggas. The prominent product characteristics makes it desirable toapply fluidised bed spray granulation to products in other solventsor when any oxygen within the hot gas would damage the product.Furthermore it is also possible to expand the process by integratingother processing steps besides drying and shaping into the proce-dure. The goal of this work is to estimate resulting particlesizes as a function of the kinetic and the cooling rate. Therefore thecrystallization of a model substance in a homogeneously cooleddroplet is considered. The kinetic of nucleation is described bythe ªclassicº theory of homogeneous nucleation, whereas the ki-netic of crystal growth is assumed to be diffusion controlled. Cal-culations are done for different mass transfer coefficients, maxi-mum nucleation rates and time dependent changes of the solubi-lity. Consideration of the gradients of the solubility function andcooling rates, which are attained by DCC, enables an estimationof required gradients of the solubility line.
