The consequences of climate changes have led to financial and humanitarian
efforts for the development of renewable energy. The lack of onshore resources for
energy production from renewable resources has driven the focus offshore energies,
namely wind energy. The high power density resulting from the combination of
average wind speed and the development of power electronics, differentiate this
technology from all others on the market.
In this thesis the behavior of a wind turbine interconnected to the electrical grid
by means of a 3 level NPC B2B convertor was studied. Regarding the converter, the
PWM control technique was used to command the IGBT and PI controllers were
used to control the AC currents, balance the voltage capacitors, control the voltage in
the DC link and the rotational speed in the electrical machine.
Initially, the behavior of a 3 level NPC converter in rectifier mode and inverter
mode was tested, both in the laboratory and in simulation. The results obtained were
very similar and equivalent to theoretical responses of the controllers, thus
demonstrating their correct dimensioning.
Using the Simulink platform of MATLAB software, a DD-PMSG wind turbine
with a grid connected 3 level NPC B2B converter was dimensioned. All the operation
and control regions of the wind turbine were designed, and, in addition, the
controllers of the laboratory prototype were implemented in this converter. During the
operation and control region 2, it was possible to control the rotor rotational speed
and maximize the power coefficient and the blade tip speed. The operation and
control region 3 showed the effectiveness in maintaining the rated power of the wind
turbine, by controlling the blade angle of attack and rotor rotational speed
