The potential of 3d fem and cfd methods for cooling systems analysis of electrical machines - the premises

Abstract

The use of 3D finite element method (FEM) and Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) for thermal and flow analysis of electrical machines cooling systems are discussed in the paper. The qualities and defects of these methods are shown. For simple example analysis of cooling system with different types of fans, the FEMAP v10.2 with TMG panel program is used. The simple thermal analysis of high speed permanent magnet electrical machine is presented. The future practical applications of these methods in design process of electric al machines are discussed. The comparison of the thermal experimental results of a fully instrumented special application machine with the numerical analysis results will be shown in the next part of article
