The Media Space of the Russian Federation in Transition

Abstract

Transition for the Russian media had begun even before the Russian Federation was established, i.e. before the former Soviet Union collapsed. At the time of the pereistroika in the second half of the 80\u27s, the media functioned under conditions of an authoritarian system and they were instrumentalized. When the RF Law on press and other mass media was adopted in 1991, the instrumentalization model came to an end and ideas on depoliticization of the mass media and ideas on the media as of "the fourth government" came to the foreground. The role of the media and their popularity grew even more in this period. The media space in Russia today still undergoes the process of transition, reacting with considerable sensitivity to political, economic and social changes in the country
