Pathologic changes in the gastroduodenal mucosa after intra-arterial infusion of 5-fluorouracil

Abstract

In experiments in dogs, infusion of 5-FU in the left gastric artery resulted in damage to the gastric mucosa varying from superficial necrosis to formation of an ulcer that had the histologic characteristics of chronic gastric ulcer. The most severe lesions occurred in dogs with prolonged infusion whereas dogs infused with approximately the same total dose in a short period of time showed necrosis of gastric epithelium but no ulceration. © 1973
