In order to do this, we must study the differential strof the algebra of functions that these generate (Section 1).1LetX = {x0, x1} be an alphabet with two letters, and letX∗ be the free non-commutative monoid generatedX, i.e., the set of all wordsw in the symbolsx0 andx1, along with the empty worde. Let S = P1(C)\{0,1,∞}denote the punctured complex projective line, and letp : Ŝ → S be a universal covering. A real analytic function Ŝ is said to besingle-valuedif and only if it lifts a continuous function onS. Let U ⊂ S denote the simplyconnected open subset ofC obtained by cutting along the intervals(−∞,0] and[1,∞). One can show [1,5] thathere exists a unique family of holomorphic functions{Liw(z): w ∈ X∗} which satisfy the following recursivdifferential equations onU :∂∂zLix0w(z)=Liw(z)z, and∂∂zLix1w(z)=Liw(z)1− z ,where we demand that Lie(z)= 1, Lixn0 (z) = 1n! logn(z) for all n ∈ N, and Liw(z) → 0 asz → 0 for all wordswnot of the formxn0 . We will also denote by Liw(z) the continuation of these functions to the universal coverinŜ.The function Lixn−10 x1(z) coincides with the classical polylogarithm Lin(z) defined above. Note that this family ofunctions is sometimes referred to as ‘generalised polylogarithms’ (e.g., [6]), and as ‘harmonic polylogarithsome mathematical physicists (e.g., [15]).It is known that theshuffle productIII :C〈X〉 × C〈X〉 → C〈X〉 makesC〈X〉 into a commutative polynomiaalgebra. If we now regardw → Liw(z) as a linear map fromC〈X〉 to the algebra of holomorphic functions oŜ, then it is easily seen to be a homomorphism of algebras, i.e., it satisfies theshuffle relations: Liw(z)Liw′(z) =Liw III w′(z) for all w,w′ ∈X∗. Let us denote byO = C[z, 1z , 11−z ], the ring of regular functions onS. It is knownthat the functions Liw(z) are linearly independent overO ([6,9], see also Corollaire 1.3), and that they have nontrivial monodromy around 0 and 1. Our main result states that there exist non-holomorphic versions ofunctions which satisfy all the above properties, except that they have trivial monodromy around 0 and 1,therefore defined onS.Theorem 0.1.There exists a unique family of single-valued functions{Lw(z): w ∈ X∗, z ∈ S}, each of whichis an explicit linear combination of the functionsLiw(z)Liw′(z̄) wherew,w′ ∈ X∗, which satisfy the differentiaequations:∂∂zLx0w(z)=Lw(z)z, and∂∂zLx1w(z)=Lw(z)1− z ,such thatLe(z) = 1, Lxn0 (z) = 1n! logn |z|2 for all n ∈ N, and limz→0Lw(z) = 0 if w is not of the formxn0 . Alternatively, one can consider multiple polylogaritin many variables, for which analogous results may also be obtained [2]. Both generalisations have manyapplications in number theory (e.g., the construction of higher regulators) and theoretical physics (econstruction of solutions to the Knizhnik–Zamolodchikov equation [3]).1.
