     Porcion Llano Grande By Cristina Marie Gonzalez Spring 2010 Dr. Russell Skowronek Llano Grade, Star County, Rio Grande City, Ranch Land        Porcion & Oral History Project University of Texas Pan American Community Historical Archaeology Program for the Schools (CHAPS)  My family has had ranch land for as long as I can remember. From the research done and from what is already known from my family, one of the ranches has been in my family for several generations and has ties to the porcions that were issued by the King of Spain in 1767. Unfortunately, I was unable to find all of the land deeds to show the land moving owner to owner down my family tree. The majority of the information that I have obtained comes from family members who have already been doing this research for years. There was also difficulty finding deeds and other information because when putting together my family tree, my family has had an array of last names. The only deed that I was able to find was that for porcion#74 that was granted to Geronimo Saens from the State of Texas (see appendix A). Geronimo Saens is my great great great great great great grandfather on father’s grandfather’s side (see appendix B).  To start with my family tree I have dated back all the way to Geronimo Saens. The land that he was granted is the land that the Monterrey Ranch that belonged to my great grandfather Crisoforo Gonzalez. The ranch was established by my great great grandfather Silvestre Gonzalez.  According to information gathered from my father, my cousin Juan Manuel Escobar our family has ties to several different porcions. Porcion 60 was initially issued to Blas Farias by the King of Spain but was later reissued to Gregorio Saens, the grandson of Nicolas Gonzalez, by the State of Texas under legislative act of February 10, 1852. Porcion 64 was initially issued to Jose Cruz de La Pena. The porciones were both located in Starr County and were under the jurisdiction of Mier. Both were purchased by great great great great great great grandfather Nicolas Antonio Gonzalez.   Porcion 66 was also under the jurisdiction of Mier, was issued to Francisco Guerra Canamar. He is my father’s great great great great great grandfather on the Guerra side of the family. Porcion 66 is located in Starr Country where Fronton, TX is currently located. The porcion was reissued to Ysidro Guerra grandson of Francisco Guerra by the State of Texas under legislative act of February 10, 1852.  Porcion 108 is also located in Starr County, was issued to Francisco Antonio Villarreal. It was re-issued to the heirs of Francisco Antonio Villarreal by the State of Texas under legislative act on February 10, 1852. Another porcion that my family has ties to is porcion 301, which just like porcion 108, is under the jurisdiction of Camargo. This porcion was initially issued by Cuervo under the authority of the King in July of 1767 and was later reissued by the State of Texas. Porcion 301 was issued to Bartolome Trevino. His daughter Maria Isabel married Juan Manuel Guerra. Juan Manuel is the son of my father’s great great great great great grandfather on the Guerra side of the family.  The porcion that I would say my family has a more direct connection to is porcion 74. Porcion 74 was in the jurisdiction of Meir. It was issued by Cuervo under the authority of the King of Spain in July of 1767 and was reissued by the State of Texas to Geronimo Saens. His granddaughter Martina de Los Santos married Juan Jose Lopez. They are the parents of Emeteria Lopez y de Los Santos who married Canuto Gonzalez. Emeteria and Canuto are grandparents of my father’s great grandfather Silvestre Gonzalez. Silvestre was the man who established the Monterey Ranch that my grandfather was born and raised on and that my father spent most of his life on.  Of all of the reported porcion connections that my family claims to have, I have only found proven evidence (see appendix C) that Porcion 74 is connected to my family and until the death of my Grandfather and his brothers, was still in the family until recently.
