There are many hidden treasures and stories within the College's Distinctive Collections. While the College Archives documents history on the hill, the items in Distinctive Collections have a much broader scope with subjects ranging from the Irish-American experience, Catholic politicians from New England, space exploration and military history to women writers and journalists. Spearheaded by Anna O'Neil Johnson and the society'sBoston chapter, a collection of autographs, manuscripts, photographs and artwork fromsome of the greatest names in literature, art, politics and the military was assembled.  Theseitems were intended to be auctioned in order to raise funds, but Mrs. Johnson bought theentire collection and later donated it to Holy Cross in memory of her husband, DavidJohnson, who attended the Preparatory Class.Displayed here are a few examples from the collection, which contains over 350individual items. As a youngadult, Guiney decided to pursue a literary career but after the death of her father in 1877,Guiney needed to support her family financially. She held a variety of jobs throughout her adultlife while continuing her literary career. Guiney is best known as a poet but she also wroteessays and biographies. Her first book, Songs at the Start, was published in 1884. Shortly after,her work was published in well-known magazines such as Harper’s and Atlantic Monthly. Guineyspent the majority of the last twenty years of her life abroad in England. Most of her time wasdevoted to researching her final book, Recusant Poets, which was published posthumously in1938.Holy Cross holds the largest collection of Louise Imogen Guiney's papers in the Archives &Distinctive Collection. Stearns, a librarian, diplomat, Congressman, and benefactor, was born in 1881 in Hull,Massachusetts. He began his career as a librarian at the Museum of Fine Arts Boston, workingthere from 1913 to 1917. After serving in the military during the First World War, Stearns heldseveral diplomatic positions including serving as the third secretary of the American Embassy inConstantinople (now Istanbul) from 1921 to1923. Stearns was the Librarian of Holy Cross from1925 to 1930. Later, he was a United States Representative (NH) from 1939 to 1945. He died in1956.  Stearns married Martha Genung on June 22, 1905. Martha was the daughter of John F. Genung,a professor at Amherst College. She wrote several books on needlepoint and edited TheTransplanting, a Narrative from the Letters of Marie Balascheff, a Russian Refugee in France. Shealso was a student of New Hampshire history and worked with two historical societies. KenneyAmerican Photographercirca 1861Guiney Family Collection(SC007-GUIN),Box 41 Folder 30Patrick Guiney was born in Ireland in 1835 and immigrated to the United States with his family,settling in Maine. He attended Holy Cross but left after one year due to financial difficulties.Later, he studied law and opened a practice in Boston. In 1859, Guiney married Jennie Doyle,with whom he had two children. When the Civil War began, he enlisted as a private with the 9thMassachusetts Volunteers. He eventually was promoted to Colonel and led his regiment incampaigns fought primarily in Virginia. At the Battle of the Wilderness in 1864, he was seriouslywounded in the eye and was honorably discharged from service. He entered politics after thewar and served as Assistant District Attorney and Registrar of the Probate Court in SuffolkCounty. Guiney never fully recovered from his eye injury and died in 1877. Displayed here are a few items from the Guiney Family Papers pertaining to Patrick Guiney. O'CALLAHAN, S.J.Photographer Unknown1945College Photograph Collection (RG01-00)Joseph O’Callahan was born on May 14, 1905 in Boston, MA. He entered the Society of Jesus in1922 at St. Andrew-on-Hudson and was ordained at Weston College on June 20, 1934.O’Callahan received his M.A., Ph.D., and S.T.L. degrees from Georgetown University. He taught atHoly Cross from 1938 to 1940 and was head of the Mathematics department when he enteredthe Navy as a chaplain in 1940. He served as chaplain aboard the U.S.S. Franklin when it wasattacked off the Japanese coast in March 1945. His bravery and devotion earned him theCongressional Medal of Honor, the first awarded to a chaplain. He wrote a book about hisexperiences entitled, I was Chaplain on the Franklin, which was published in 1956. After WorldWar II, he returned to Holy Cross to teach philosophy and theology. He was born in 1847 inNew York City and attended the Free Academy in New York to become a physician. After droppingout, he began to study painting and was mainly self-taught. His work was first exhibited at theNational Academy of Design in New York in 1867. Beginning in 1869, he traveled to the AmericanWest and the imagery from this trip became the primary inspiration for his work. Blakelockstruggled to find a market for his work upon his return to New York and his mental healthdeteriorated. He was in and out of mental hospitals from 1899 until his death in 1919. During thisperiod, he continued to paint and his work gained recognition. Dorothy G. Wayman PapersARCHIVES & DISTINCTIVE COLLECTIONSDorothy Godfrey Wayman, author and journalist, was born on January 7, 1893 in SanBernardino, California but her family returned to the East Coast a few years later. On July 10,1915, she married Charles S. Wayman and three year later, they moved to Japan with their twosons. The couple’s third son was born while they lived abroad. Her marriage began to fall apartwhile in Japan and she obtained a legal separation and custody of their children in 1923.Wayman and her sons returned to the Boston area. She finally divorced her husband in 1929. Wayman began writing for various Boston newspapers to support her family and in 1924, sheobtained a position as a correspondent for the Boston Globe. Two years later, she becameeditor of the Falmouth Enterprise, a weekly publication to supplement her income as acorrespondent. Wayman was promoted to feature writer for the Globe after she lost her editorrole in 1933. She also wrote articles for popular magazines and authored a dozen books. Wayman was fired from her position at the Boston Globe in 1954 and this prompted her tomove to Olean, New York. She accepted a position as Reference Librarian at St. Bonaventure’sUniversity and held this position until 1963. Additionally, she worked as a writer for the OleanTimes Herald until shortly before her death. She died on October 27, 1975.Displayed here are a few items from the Dorothy G. Hegraduated from Holy Cross in 1949, received a master’s degree in physics from FordhamUniversity, and attended the Advanced Management Program at the Harvard Business School.He worked at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) during the Apolloprogram, 1962-1970; the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), 1979-1981; and theNational Science Foundation, 1992-1995. In 1996, he started Green Associates, a privateconsulting firm. Green died in 2011. He donated materials documenting his career and his invovlement with the early spacemissions and the race to the Moon to the Archives & Distinctive Collections in 1999. The Vaughanfamily was a devout Catholic family in England even when English law made it difficult to be apracticing Catholic. Her parents, John Vaughan and Eliza Louise Rolls were married in 1830. Hermother, also from a Catholic family, prayed that her children would have the vocation to enterreligous life. Six of her eight brothers became priests and all of her sisters entered convents.Clare entered the Community of the Poor Clares in Amiens, France in the spring of 1861 andprofessed her vows on October 15th of the same year. She took the name Sister Mary Clare.Shortly after, she became ill and died on January 20, 1862.Displayed here are items from the Clare Vaughan Collection, which were used by LadyLovat in her book, Clare Vaughan. This published manuscript of recipes compiled by the union was published by E.B. Stillings & Co. Printers of Boston in 1878 and contains a variety of recipes as well as remedies for many illnesses. It also contains a "Useful Knowledge" section with information for how to fix broken china and how to properly keep a garden. Fitzgerald Collection (SC005-FITZ),Box 40, Folder 1John Francis "Honey Fitz" Fitzgerald, the son of Irish immigrants, was born in Boston on February 11, 1863. In 1889, he married Mary Josephine Hannon and the couple had six children including Rose, who was the mother of John Fitzgerald Kennedy, Robert Kennedy and Edward Kennedy. Like his grandchilden, Fitzgerald was a politican whose political career began when he was elected to the Boston Common Council in 1891. He is best known for his tenure as Mayor of Boston from 1906 to 1908 and from 1910 to 1914. Additionally, Fitzgerald was a businessman and notably, editor of the The Republic, a weekly newspaper for Irish Catholic Americans based in Boston. Fitzgerald died in 1950.
