IntroductionThis is the first edition of the minitrack Self-AdaptiveSystems and Applications, which is part of the SoftwareTechnology track. The minitrack provides a venue forpapers on self-adaptive systems and applications.Self-adaptation is often seen as an emergentproperty in self-organizing systems, where adaptationmechanisms are not explicitly defined. Adaptivity isthe capacity to learn and adapt to its environments,especially considering various uncertainties. Aspecial emphasis of this minitrack is the inclusion ofself-adaptive systems and applications in constantlychanging environments to facilitate reducing(re-)configuration, troubleshooting, or maintenanceduring the operating phase. Among others, challenges ofself-adaptive systems include dealing with uncertainties,communication overhead, adaptation decision criteria, adegree of decentralization, or model drift.In general, the intended scope of the minitrackincludes, but is not limited to, the following topics:• Machine Learning for Self-Adaptive Systems andApplications• Self-Aware and Context-Aware Applications• Self-Configuring, -Healing, -Protecting and-Optimizing Systems• Self-Organizing Applications• Self-Adaptive Systems and Applications• Decentralization and Emergent Applications• Automation and Autonomization in(Intra-)Logistics• Robotics and Automation• Coordination and collaboration of autonomousagents• Smart data models (harmonization of data forportability for different applications)2. ContributionsThe minitrack received five submissions, of whichthree have been accepted and two were rejected.The first paper by Chahal et al. discussesa multi-agent patrolling problem. The multi-agentpatrolling problem consists of positioning agents tominimize their idleness. Chahal et al. present anapproach based on the discretization of a continuousenvironment to generate dynamic waypoints, theso-called interest points (IP). With this approach, theagents can cover the whole environment while dealingwith its topography and their own observation range.A proof is given that the agents and their observationrange cover the whole environment. The illustrativeexperiments show that such dynamic IP locations areadaptive and more efficient in locating high-idlenessareas than the static IP approach.In the second paper, Ghumrawi et al. address theacceleration of agent-based models (ABM) and fuzzycognitive maps (FCM) to study emergent phenomenain large-scale self-adaptive systems. The authorsdeveloped an open-source library that automaticallyaccelerates ABM/FCM models by leveraging theavailable cores of a graphical processing unit. TheProceedings of the 56th Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences | 2023Page 6851URI: https://hdl.handle.net/10125/103463978-0-9981331-6-4(CC BY-NC-ND 4.0)library’s feasibility, correctness, and scalability areanalyzed based on a case study and across differentnetworks representing agent interactions.This minitrack concludes with a paper by Riley et al.that presents the architectural design of an adaptive layerfor intrusion detection systems (IDS). They ask what todo if the analysis technologies must be adapted. In thepaper, Riley et al. consider an IDS that is assisted bytwo components: A neural network that finds securityanomalies and an attack graph that informs the IDSabout system states of interest. The authors present twouse cases to demonstrate different mitigation strategiesand their impact on the IDS’s supporting components.3. ConclusionThe papers selected for the minitrack cover a widerange of different aspects in self-adaptive systemsand applications. This demonstrates the importanceof self-adaption and shows that the interest inself-adaptation is not limited to particular systems andapplications. As a conclusion, we aim to developfurther, establish, and present future editions of theminitrack on self-adaptive systems and applications. Weare convinced that these will be of high interest for abroad community in academia and industry.Page 6852
