Results are particularlyhelpful to grain sorghum producersin selecting hybrids suited to theirarea.We tested 44 commercial andexperimental hybrids at sixlocations in Mississippi in 1979. Agood test of performance cannot bemade if damaging populations ofinsects are present; therefore, in-secticides were applied as needed.See MAFES Bulletins 817 and 836for methods of control of insects ongrain sorghum.Resistance to diseases is impor-tant in selecting a hybrid for areaswhere diseases are a problem. Also,planting at the recommended timehelps reduce damage caused bydiseases and insects.Table 1. Each plotconsisted of two rows 38 or 40inches wide and 20 ft long. Alltrials were planted at the rate of 7lbs of seed per acre. Heads from 13ft of each plot were hand-harvested, dried and threshed, andgrain yield was adjusted to 14%moisture. Data reported have notbeen adjusted for bird damage, buttrials severely damaged by birdswere not harvested. Rating of 0 = no disease symptoms - 4 = disease killed plants.4 Average of Mississippi State and Newton, MS.2ResultsHybrids were separated into twotrials at each location, 36 non-bird-resistant hybrids in one trial (Table2) and eight bird-resistant hybridsin the other (Table 3). Bird damageto the non-bird-resistant hybridswas recorded only at MississippiState and Holly Springs. Birddamage of the non-bird-resistanthybrids ranged from 1 to 25% atMississippi State, from 13 to 67% atHolly Springs and averaged 6% atMississippi State and 27% at HollySprings.Lodging was negligible at alllocations.Grain yield of the 36 non-bird-resistant hybrids in the 1979 trialsranged from 912 lbs per acre forDeKalb E-57 in the Holly Springstrial to 7744 for Pfizer M565 in theNewton trial. Yields of the 36hybrids averaged 4323 lbs per acrefor the four test locations (Table 2).Grain yield of the eight bird-resistant hybrids in the 1979 trialsranged from 1538 lbs per acre forTexas Triumph Two 75 BRG in theRaymond trial to 7874 lbs for N.K.Savanna 5 in the Newton trial.Yield of the eight hybrids averaged3382 lbs per acre for the six testlocations (Table 3).Quantity of harvested good-quahty grain (or silage) is the bestguide to the desirability ofsorghumhybrids; however, performancedata for any one year may bemisleading. Therefore, the two- andthree-year average yields ofhybrids that have been evaluatedfor these periods of time also arepresented (Tables 4-7).Table 4.
