Users are primarily the Communication Sciences and Disorders faculty members and undergraduate and graduate students. Faculty, staff, students, and family members affiliated with the Center for Autism and Related Disorders (http://ucf-card.org/) may also utilize the library’s collection.    Programs offered include:  Undergraduate Programs B.A., B.S. (and Minor) in Communication Sciences and Disorders The Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders at UCF offers two degree options: a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) and a Bachelor of Science (B.S.). Both undergraduate programs are designed to provide students with a strong liberal arts degree with a sound scientific foundation that leads to employment in a variety of entry-level careers in health and human services or to graduate study in speech-language pathology, audiology or related disciplines. The master's degree is considered the entry level for employment in most speech-language pathology positions and for the Certificate of Clinical Competency from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA). The clinical doctorate is the entry level for audiology.  Graduate Programs M.A. in Communication Sciences and Disorders – Student Outcome Measures The Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders offers professional education leading to a Master of Arts in Communication Sciences and Disorders. The primary goal of this clinical master's degree program is to prepare speech-language pathologists for work in schools, hospitals, rehabilitation centers, community clinics, and private practices with children, adolescents and adults who experience a variety of communication and associated disorders. To accomplish this goal, much of the educational programming at the master's level takes place at the UCF Communication Disorders Clinic and in more than 200 practicum/externship sites throughout the greater Orlando area and the state of Florida.  Certificate Programs: Undergraduate Certificate Program in Language Development and Disorders Graduate Certificate Program in Medical Speech-Language Pathology The Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders offers a program leading to a Graduate Certificate in Medical Speech-Language Pathology for practicing speech-language pathologists and students currently enrolled in the master's degree program in communication sciences and disorders. The program is designed to prepare speech-language pathologists and students currently enrolled in the master's degree program with the knowledge and skills necessary to evaluate and treat individuals with medically related communication disorders.  Doctoral Programs: Ph.D. in Education – Communication Sciences and Disorders Track The Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders in the College of Health and Public Affairs offers a doctoral program in collaboration with the College of Education, known as the Ph.D. in Education-1  Communication Sciences and Disorders Track. The focus of this program is on language and literacy in children and adolescents. The major purpose of this program is to prepare doctoral-level scholar/leaders to serve as (1) faculty members in colleges or universities who will prepare the next generation of school-based speech-language pathologists or other educators with expertise in language and literacy; (2) researchers who will play a vital role in advancing the knowledge base in the language basis of literacy (3) professional developers/consultants for national, state or local educational agencies to facilitate implementation of evidence-based practice in language and literacy; (4) change agents who will affect policy and procedures in language and literacy initiatives.     Collection Description:  The communication disorders collection consists mainly of books and periodicals (print and electronic) housed in the John C. Hitt Library on the UCF Orlando campus. However, some works are housed at the UCF Regional Campus libraries. The library provides access to many communication and medicine-related databases, including Medline, CINAHL, PsycInfo, Linguistics and Language Behavior Abstracts, Communication and Mass Media, and ERIC. The library also purchases access to many electronic journal collections.  Some journals in the field are: Communication Disorders Quarterly, International Journal of Language & Communication Disorders, Journal of Child Language, Journal of Fluency Disorders, Journal of Speech and Hearing Research, Journal of Speech, Language, and Hearing Research,     Collection Guidelines:  Chronology: Emphasis/restriction Emphasis is on current research. While attempts will be made to fill in gaps of retrospective material when funding permits, the primary focus of the collection is on current research materials.  Languages: Emphasis/restriction Although there are no limitations to the languages the library collects, the emphasis is on English works and English translations.   Geography: Emphasis/restriction No limit is placed on the geographical scope of the collection.  Subject Treatment  All materials related to communication disorders will be considered for addition to the collection, especially those that directly support the curriculum and research needs of the students and faculty.  Material Formats: Emphasis/restriction Journals and monographs are the main formats in all subject areas of interest to communication disorders, with strong emphasis on journal subscriptions. Electronic access to journals is a high priority considering the number of online and mixed mode courses being offered.  Publication Dates Emphasis is on materials published within the last five years. The acquisition of retrospective materials depends on the availability of the resource, its content, and budgetary constraints.    2  Subjects Collected and Collection Levels:  Communication disorders is a highly interdisciplinary field. Researchers’ interests may fall anywhere from education of children with communication disorders, psychological aspects of all communication disorders, physiological assessments, linguistic issues, cultural differences in communication, etc. With such a wide-ranging discipline it is difficult to list all of the subjects likely to be collected and their levels. Every effort is made through input from faculty, as well as the library’s approval plan, and publishers’ catalogs to make sure all materials relevant to the research interests and curricular interests of the program are purchased.    Subjects Excluded: Works intended for consumers or patients (consumer health) are collected minimally.     Collection Management Issues:  Replacement Attempts are made to replace items that are lost, stolen, or damaged. Exceptions include outdated or superseded editions unless there is a specific need or historical significance.  Retention/Deselection Generally material is not deselected unless its condition has deteriorated past the point of usability.  Attempts are made to repair and retain damaged or deteriorating items.  Outdated, unused, or no longer reliable materials may be removed from the collection in some cases. Periodicals or electronic resources may be weeded when they are no longer subscribed to and related programs have been discontinued, or when replaced by another format.   Out of Print Acquisition Online access to out-of-print dealers often makes acquisition of these items more convenient than in the past.  As with other materials, out-of-print titles will be acquired if there is a clear need and the price is reasonable.  Preservation The Collection Development Librarian will consult with the Special Collections Department on all matters relating to the care, repair, and safekeeping of all circulating library materials regardless of format type.  Preservation issues of importance to the Collection Development Librarian include:  • Collection maintenance of existing materials – rehousing, rebinding, repair, conservation, media transfer  • Deacidification projects - selected titles, whole collections, or partial collections  • Reformatting materials to microfilm or digital images  • Questions related to gifts-in-kind that may require preservation attention before materials are added to the collection  3
