The 1978trials were conducted in three Deltaenvironments—Stoneville, Sum-ner and Tunica—and three hillarea environments— HollySprings, Mississippi State andVerona.The 17 varieties tested atStoneville and Tunica in 1978 areincluded in the CooperativeRegional Variety TestingProgram. 'McNair 235', 'Coker315', 'Deltapine 7141' and 'Rex 713'were evaluated for the first time.Two of the varieties included in theStoneville and Tunica trials—'Acala SJ-5' and 'Paymaster 303'—were not evaluated at Sumner andthree varieties—Acala SJ-5,Paymaster 303 and McNair 235—were not included in the trials atHolly Springs, Mississippi Stateand Verona.Each entry was randomized andreplicated six times. Yield deter-minations were based on weight ofcotton harvested from two-rowplots. Determinations of lintpercentage, boll size, seed indexand fiber properties were madefrom hand-picked samples. Fiberproperty evaluations were made inthe U.S.D.A. Cotton FiberLaboratory at Knoxville,Tennessee and the MAFES CottonFiber Laboratory at Stoneville.Delta, 1978The Stoneville test was plantedApril 18 on a Bosket very finesandy loam soil. Slow stand es-tablishment and slow growthresulted from the excessivemoisture and cool temperatures atplanting time. The plants ex-perienced drought stress in earlyJuly and the plots were irrigated onJuly 11 and July 25. The test washarvested on September 29. Lintyields ranged from 800 to 1126 lbsper acre (Table 1).The Sumner test was plantedDelta, Two-Yearand Four- Year Averages ——ResultsApril 21 on a Dubbs sandy loamsoil. The test was harvested onOctober 6. Growing conditions atSumner were poor at planting time,but each variety tested producedmore lint in this trial than in eitherof the other Delta trials. Yieldsranged from 1000 to 1407 lbs of Hntper acre (Table 2).Planting of the test at Tunica ona Dundee silt loam soil was delayeduntil May 17 because of excessivesoil moisture and lowtemperatures. Excellent growingconditions resulted in good standsand rapid growth. The test washarvested twice, and maturity atfirst harvest on October 11 rangedfrom 75 to 89%. lint yields rangedfrom 653 to 1110 lbs per acre (Table3).Average yield of the 15 varietiesthat were tested at each Deltalocation in 1978 ranged from 902 to1214 lbs of lint per acre (Table 4).Lint yield of the 15 varietiesaveraged over the three Delta trialswas 1085 lbs per acre.Lint yield of the eleven varieties period (1977-78) ranged from 1016 Delta environments for four yearsgrown in seven Delta en- to 1114 lbs per acre (Table 5). Nine (1975-78). Average yields over thisvironments over the two-year varieties have been tested in 13 four-year period ranged from 814 to19121bsoflintper acre (Table 6). Maturity on September 8 rangedfrom 14.6 to 31.4%.Stands from the April 25 plant-ing on Catalpa silty clay loam soilat Verona were poor, and theresults are not reported. Lint yieldsof a second test planted May 17 onthe same soil type ranged from 422to 580 lbs per acre (Table 8).The test at Holly Springs wasplanted May 11 on a Grenada siltloam soil. lint yields ranged from738 to 991 lbs per acre (Table 9).Maturity at first harvest onSeptember 25 ranged from 44 to64%.Hill Area, Two-Year AveragesNine varieties have been testedat Holly Springs for two years(1977-78). Average yields over thistwo-year period ranged from 762 to845 lbs of lint per acre (Table 10).These small differences in averagejdelds indicate that factors otherthan yield also need to be con-sidered in selecting varieties for thehill area. One important factor isearliness, and the earliest of thecommercially available varietiestested at Holly Springs have beenDES 56, DES 24, Stoneville 731 Nand Coker 304.2Table 1.
