panels are installed by hand• Conforms to existing pipe  with less invert change• Ability to attach pre‐ manufactured fish weirs  and ladders• Minimizes scope and  duration of traffic impact corroded steel• Annular grout works with  the FRP to provide stiffness  and fills the void between  corrugated steel and liner• Powder‐actuated fasteners  transfer the thrust load in  the culvert from solid steel  to the FRP liner12AEWC Performed Laboratory Tests to  Verify Predictions and Prove the Concept• FRP laminate mechanical  properties were measured  to validate models• Component level testing  confirmed seam strength of  mechanical connection• A full‐scale mockup was  evaluated to validate the  design and prove overall  structural integrity13Designed to AASHTO LRFD Bridge     Design Specifications• Design loads with applicable load factors = 2.25 KSF– structural + wearing surface + vertical earth pressure– live loads did not apply since earth cover > 8 feet• Compressive: ultimate strength/actual stress = 17• Buckling: ultimate/actual = 2.5• Seam Strength: ultimate/actual = 2• Durability: predicted design life is > 75 years14Future Development Considerations• Seam strength studies– Fastener tearing resistance with new flange laminate– Impact of fastener spacing and number of rows– Accelerated weathering of fasteners/joint• Continuous improvement from lessons learned  during previous installations• Expansion to other structures and applications:  water and sewer mains, erosion protection, bridge
