The genus Passiflora is represented by 31 species with ample distribution and occurs in almost all biomes in the state of Bahia, Northeastern Brazil. Based on previous study about the Passiflora species from Bahia and considering the common names ascribed to some species by these authors, this article deals with the lexeme ‘maracujá’ from a semasiological perspective, seeking to understand the linguistic construction of that term. This article has a cognitive ethnobotany approach and relates to the study area of linguistic ethnobiology, which investigates the relationship between human beings and the plants as mediated by language.Key words: ethnobotany, ethnotaxonomy, phytonomy.No Estado da Bahia, Nordeste do Brasil, o gênero Passiflora está representado por 31 espécies com distribuição ampla, ocorrendo em praticamente todos os biomas do Estado. A partir de estudo prévio sobre as espécies de Passiflora na Bahia e considerando os nomes comuns associados a algumas espécies por estes autores, o presente artigo investiga o lexema ‘maracujá’ desde uma perspectiva semasiológica, buscando entender a formação lingüística do termo. Este artigo se insere na abordagem da etnobotânica cognitiva, relacionando-se com o campo de estudos da etnobiologia lingüística, a qual trata da relação seres humanos/mundo vegetal conforme mediada pela linguagem.
