Abstract Submittedfor the DPP16 Meeting ofThe American Physical SocietyExperimental Study of Convective Cells and RF Sheaths Ex-cited by a Fast Wave Antenna in the LAPD MICHAEL MARTIN, WAL-TER GEKELMAN, PATRICK PRIBYL, BART VAN COMPERNOLLE, TROYCARTER, UCLA, Dept. of Physics and Astronomy, DIRK VAN EESTER, Labora-tory for Plasma Physics, ERM-KMS, Belgium, KRISTEL CROMBE, Departmentof Applied Physics, Ghent University, Belgium | Ion cyclotron resonance heating(ICRH) will be essential for ITER where it is planned to couple 20 MW to theplasma. During ICRH, radio frequency (RF) sheaths may form on the antennaor farther away, and convective cells are suspected to form adjacent to ICRH an-tennas, negatively aecting both machine and plasma performance. The LAPD(ne  1012 13cm 3 , Te  1-10 eV, B0  0.4 to 2 kG, diameter  60 cm, length 17m) is an ideal device for performing detailed experiments to fully diagnose thesephenomena. A 200 kW RF system capable of pulsing at the 1 Hz. rep. rate ofthe LAPD and operating from 2 to 2.5 MHz has been constructed to perform suchstudies. B0 can be adjusted so that this encompasses the 1st to 7th harmonic offci in H plasmas. Emissive, Mach, Langmuir, and B-eld probes measured plasmapotential, bulk plasma ows, wave patterns, ne, and Te in 2D planes at various axiallocations from the antenna. Plasma potential enhancements of up to 90 V alongmagnetic eld lines connected to the antenna and induced ExB ows consistent instructure with convective cells were observed.
