The tutor was Prof. Dr. NedjeljkoFrančula, and the members of the Committeefor evaluation and defending of the doctoralthesis were Prof. Dr. Miljenko Lapaine andProf. Dr. Branko Rojc from the University of Ljubljanatogether with her tutor.Nada Vučetić was born on 28th September 1958 inHvar. After finishing her primary school she attendedhigh school in Hvar where she graduated in 1977. Shegraduated from the Faculty of Geodesy, University inZagreb in 1987. In the same year she got the Universityreward for her students work titled AbsoluteOrientation of Astro-Geodetic Geoid Model for theTerritory of SFRJ by Means of MohorovičićsDiscontinuity. She finished the postgraduate studies, theprogram of cartography at the Faculty of Geodesy,University in Zagreb in 1996 by defending her masterthesis Generalisation of Linear Map Elements. Aftershe had graduated from the undergraduate studies sheworked as a professional collaborator at the Station forObserving the Earths Tide Waves at the Faculty ofGeodesy, University of Zagreb. In 1987 she was electedan assistant at the same Faculty. In 1997 she was electedan assistant for the courses Geoinformatics I, MapProjections, Digital Mapping I and MapGeneralisation. She works on automation incartography. She has participated on scientific projects:Cartographic Space Researching, Cartography andGeoinformation Systems, Regional Research of theEarths Shape and Tide Waves, Gravity Field inGeodesy, Geophysics and Geodynamics. She is acollaborator on a scientific project CroatianCartography  Scientific Bases, and on scientific andprofessional projects Croatian Geodetic Dictionary,Croatian Cartographers and Proposal for Official MapProjections of the Republic of Croatia. She hasparticipated at about twenty scientific and professionalgathering in the country and abroad. She has made afew programs for personal computer andpublished more than forty papers. She is amember of the Croatian Geodetic Society.From 1993 till 1995 she was technical editorof Geodetski list.Short content of the thesisThe doctoral thesis contains 108 pages withthe format A4, including 72 images, 4 tables, referencelist with 54 titles, abstract in Croatian and English and ashort curriculum vitae. The thesis is divided into sevenchapters:1. Introduction2. Map generalisation and its automation3. Definition and geometric interpretation of linearcorrelation coefficient4. Line generalisation and linear correlation coefficient5. Problem of line selfintersection and collision withother objects6. Testing of the suggested algorithm on practicalexamples7. ConclusionIn the introductory part of the work it is explained howimportant the automation of line generalisation on amap is for the purpose of achieving final goal  globalsolution of the map generalisation automation problem.In the second chapter there is a short presentation ofwhat is understood under map generalisation inliterature, and its automation, and what are the basicproblems that people have tried and are still trying tosolve, especially in the area of line generalisationautomation. After that, there is a systematicpresentation of the most important existing algorithmsfor automatic line simplification. Thereby it is noticedthat all these algorithms are based on metrical criteria:characteristic properties of points, similarity of shapesand all other properties of lines are tried to be describedwith the amounts of distance, area or angles.The basic idea of the thesis is the introduction of linearcorrelation coefficient as a measure of shape similarity111Doktori i magistri                                                                                                                                                                   KiG 2002,1Nada Vučetić, doktorica tehničkih znanostiNada Vučetić obranila je 11. srpnja 2001. naGeodetskom fakultetu Sveučilita u Zagrebudoktorsku disertaciju pod nazivom Generalizacijalinijskih elemenata karte po kriteriju maksimalnesličnosti. Mentor je bio prof. dr. sc. Nedjeljko Frančula,a u Povjerenstvu za ocjenu i obranu disertacije, osimmentora, bili su jo prof. dr. sc. Miljenko Lapaine i prof.dr. Branko Rojc s Fakultete za gradbenitvo ingeodezijo Univerze v Ljubljani.Nada Vučetić rođena je 28. rujna 1958. godine u Hvaru.Nakon osnovne kole pohađala je gimnaziju u Hvaru,gdje je maturirala 1977. Na Geodetskom fakultetuSveučilita u Zagrebu diplomirala je 1987. Godine1987. dobila je nagradu Sveučilita za studentski radpod naslovom Apsolutna orijentacija astro-geodetskogmodela geoida za teritorij SFRJ pomoćuMohorovičićevog diskontinuiteta. Poslijediplomskistudij, smjer kartografija na Geodetskom fakultetuSveučilita u Zagrebu zavrila je 1996. obranommagistarskog rada pod naslovom Generalizacijalinijskih elemenata karte. Nakon diplomiranja radila jekao stručna suradnica na Stanici za opaanje Zemljinihplimnih valova Geodetskog fakulteta Sveučilita uZagrebu. Na istom je fakultetu izabrana u listopadu1987. za asistenticu, a 1991. za suradnicu u nastavi.Godine 1997. izabrana je za asistenticu za kolegijeGeoinformatika I, Kartografske projekcije, Digitalnakartografija I i Kartografska generalizacija. Bavi seautomatizacijom u kartografiji. Sudjelovala je naznanstvenim projektima: Kartografsko istraivanjeprostora, Kartografija i geoinformacijski sustavi,Regionalno istraivnje oblika i plimnih valova Zemlje,Gravitacijsko polje u geodeziji, geofizici i geodinamici.Suradnica je na znanstvenom projektu Hrvatskakartografija  znanstvene osnove te na znanstveno-stručnim projektima Hrvatski geodetski rječnik,Hrvatski kartografi i Prijedlog slubenih kartografskihprojekcija Republike Hrvatske. Sudjelovala je nadvadesetak znanstvenih i stručnih skupova u zemlji iinozemstvu. Izradila je nekoliko programa za osobnoračunalo te objavila vie od četrdeset radova. Članica jeHrvatskoga geodetskog drutva. Od 1993. do 1995. bilaje tehnička urednica Geodetskog lista.Kratak sadraj disertacijeDoktorska disertacija sadri 108 stranica formata A4,uključujući 72 slike, 4 tablice, popis literature s 64naslova, saetak na hrvatskom i engleskom jeziku ikratki ivotopis. Rad je podijeljen na sljedećih sedampoglavlja:1. Uvod2. Kartografska generalizacija i njezina automatizacija3. Definicija i geometrijska interpretacija koeficijentalinearne korelacije4. Generalizacija linija i koeficijent linearne korelacije5. Problem samosječenja linija i kolizija s drugimobjektima6. Ispitivanje predloenog algoritma na praktičnimprimjerima7. Zaključak.U uvodnom dijelu rada objanjena je vanostautomatizacije generalizacije linija na karti zaostvarenje konačnog cilja  globalnog rjeenjaproblema automatizacije kartografske generalizacije.U drugom poglavlju najprije je ukratko prikazano to seu literaturi podrazumijeva pod kartografskomgeneralizacijom i njezinom automatizacijom, te koji sutemeljni problemi koje se pokuavalo i jo uvijekpokuava rijeiti, posebno na području automatizacijegeneralizacije linija. Slijedi sustavni prikaz najvanijihpostojećih algoritama za automatskopojednostavnjivanje linija. Pritom se uočava da se svi tialgoritmi temelje na metričkim kriterijima:karakterističnost točaka, sličnost oblika i sva drugasvojstva linija pokuavaju se opisati iznosimaudaljenosti, povrina ili kutova.Osnovna je ideja rada uvođenje koeficijenta linearnekorelacije kao mjere sličnosti oblika koja bi boljeodgovarala vizualnoj sličnosti. Zato je treće poglavljeposvećeno definiciji i geometrijskoj interpretacijikoeficijenta linearne korelacije.Doctors and Masters of Sciences                                                                                                                                        KiG 2002,1112that would much better correspond to visual similarity.Therefore the third chapter is dedicated to definitionand geometric interpretation of linear correlationcoefficient.The next three chapters (4-6) are the central part of thework and the authors contribution to linegeneralisation.In the fourth chapter the procedure of line simplificationis processed on the basis of maximum similarity(maximum value of linear correlation coefficient).Basically, the points are thrown out one after anotheruntil reaching the desired degree of simplification. Ineach single step one throws out the point whosethrowing out reduces the linear correlation coefficientbetween the source and simplified line to the leastextent. It corresponds to the image that a simplified lineshould be as similar to the source line as possible.It has been noticed that the described application ofalgorithm for line simplification on the basis ofmaximum similarity has an unpleasant property: thecomputation time proportional with n3 where n is thenumber of line points. From the data in the thesis it canbe seen that in case of that kind of problem one reachesvery quickly the possibility frontier and no modern offaster computers help. The author has suggested in herwork and elaborated the optimising strategy thatreduces a number of computing operationsconsiderably. Testing of optimised algorithm applicationby means of computers has confirmed the hypothesis ofcomputation time proportionality n2 where n is thenumber of line points. The time of executing a programon personal computer with the processor Pentium 233for the line with 1000 points has been reduced from 5,5hours to 50 seconds, and for the line 10 000 points fromexpected 230 days to 1,4 hours.In the fifth chapter the problem of line selfintersectionis considered and of collisions with other objects thatappears with all algorithms for automatic linegeneralisation. The solution has been found based ontemporary prohibition of throwing those points whosethrowing out would lead to selfintersection or conflictwith other objects. The generalisation has also beenprocessed that makes exaggerated closing of a line toitself of other objects impossible.In the sixth chapter there is a possibility of applying thesuggested procedure illustrated on practical examples. Ithas been indicated thereby that this procedure keptmuch better the characteristic shape of the line than theprocedures basing on metrical criteria. Thus the resultsof a new procedure correspond much better to what isexpected from generalisation.In the conclusion there are fundamental results of thework presented in short, as well as a few suggestionsfor further research.On the basis of reading and evaluating the doctoralthesis by Nada Vučetić, MSc, the member of theCommittee have made a conclusion that in her work thecandidate has given a valuable contribution toautomation of line generalisation in cartography andsuggested a new method for line simplification on thebasis of maximum similarity criteria.Miljenko Lapaine, Nedjeljko FrančulaIvana Wechselberger, MSc in geodesyIvana Wechselberger, born Javorović,defended on 19th October 2001 her masters thesisModernisation of Topographic Maps by Means ofSatellite Image at the Faculty of Geodesy, University ofZagreb. Her tutor was Prof. Dr. Miljenko Lapaine, andthe members of the Commission for evaluation anddefending of the masters thesis were Prof. Dr.Nedjeljko Frančula, Prof. Dr. Miljenko Lapaine andAssist. Prof. Dr. Stanislav Frange.Ivana Wechselberger was born on 29th June 1968 inOsijek where she finished primary school, secondaryschool of mathematics and informatics and secondarymusic school. She enrolled at the Faculty of Geodesy,University of Zagreb in 1987. In 1993 she won thereward of the rector for students work Digitising of theLakes in the Republic of Croatia. She graduated in July1993 with the diploma thesis Digital Map of WaterBodies in the Republic of Croatia and Bosnia andHerzegovina. From December 1993 she has beenworking in the Ministry of Defence of the Republic ofCroatia. In 1999 she completed a two-months SpaceCartography Course in GDTA (Groupement pour leDéveloppement de la Télédétection Aérospatiale),Toulouse, France, and in 2000 in the same institutionthe course of GIS and remote sensing GIS Plus. Shepublished a few works in scientific journals andproceedings.113Doktori i magistri                                                                                                                                                                   KiG 2002,1Sljedeća tri poglavlja (46) sredinji su dio rada iautoričin prinos generalizaciji linija.U četvrtom poglavlju razrađuje se postupakpojednostavnjivanja linije na temelju maksimalnesličnosti (maksimalne vrijednosti koeficijenta linearnekorelacije). U osnovi je predloenog postupkauzastopno izbacivanje točaka sve dok se ne postigneeljeni stupanj pojednostavnjivanja. U svakompojedinačnom koraku izbacuje se točka čije izbacivanjenajmanje smanjuje koeficijent linearne korelacijeizmeđu izvorne i pojednostavnjene linije. To odgovarapredodbi da pojednostavnjena linija treba biti tosličnija izvornoj liniji.Pokazalo se da opisana primjena algoritma zapojednostavnjivanje linija na temelju maksimalnesličnosti ima neugodno svojstvo: vrijeme računanjaproporcionalno s n3, gdje je n broj točaka linije. Izpodataka u disertaciji vidljivo je da se kod problematakve naravi vrlo brzo stiţe na granicu moguăega i danikakva modernija ili brţa računala ne pomaţu. Autoricaje u radu predloţila i razradila strategiju optimiranja,koja bitno smanjuje broj računskih operacija. Testiranjana računalu optimirane primjene algoritma potvrdila supostavljenu hipotezu proporcionalnosti vremenaračunanja s n2, gdje je n broj točaka linije. Vrijemeizvođenja programa na osobnom računalu s procesoromPentium 233 za liniju s 1000 točaka smanjeno je od 5,5sati na 50 sekundi, a za liniju s 10 000 točaka odočekivanih oko 230 dana na 1,4 sata.U petom je poglavlju razmotren problem samosječenjalinija i kolizija s drugim objektima, koji se javlja kodsvih algoritama za automatsku generalizaciju linija.Pronađeno je rjeenje koje se temelji na privremenojzabrani izbacivanja onih točaka, čije bi izbacivanjedovelo do samosječenja ili konflikata s drugimobjektima. Također je razrađeno poopćenje kojeonemogućuje i pretjerano pribliavanje linije samoj sebiili drugim objektima.U estom je poglavlju na praktičnim primjerimailustrirana mogućnost primjene predloenog postupka.Pritom se pokazalo da taj postupak mnogo boljezadrava karakteristični oblik linije nego postupci kojise temelje na metričkim kriterijima. Time rezultatinovog postupka bolje odgovaraju onomu to se očekujeod generalizacije.U zaključku su ukratko navedeni osnovni rezultati radai nekoliko prijedloga za daljnja istraivanja.Na osnovi pregleda i vrednovanja doktorskog rada mr.sc. Nade Vučetić članovi Povjerenstva zaključili su daje pristupnica u svom radu dala vrijedan doprinosautomatizaciji generalizacije linija u kartografiji, te daje predloila novu metodu za pojednostavnjivanje linijana temelju kriterija maksimalne sličnosti.Miljenko Lapaine, Nedjeljko FrančulaIvana Wechselberger, magistrica geodezijeIvana Wechselberger, rođ. Mentor je bioprof. dr. sc. Miljenko Lapaine, a upovjerenstvima za ocjenu i obranumagistarskog rada bili su prof. dr. sc.Nedjeljko Frančula, prof. dr. sc. Miljenko Lapaine i doc.dr. sc. Stanislav Frange.Ivana Javorović rođena je 29. lipnja 1968. u Osijeku,gdje je zavrila osnovnu kolu, srednju matematičko-informatičku i srednju glazbenu kolu. Geodetskifakultet Sveučilita u Zagrebu upisala je 1987. Godine1993. dobila je Rektorovu nagradu za studentski radDigitalizacija jezera Republike Hrvatske. Diplomiralaje u srpnju 1993. godine s temom Digitalnakarta voda Republike Hrvatske i Bosne iHercegovine. Od prosinca 1993. radi uMinistarstvu obrane RH. God. 1999. zavrilaje dvomjesečni tečaj Space CartographyCourse u GDTA (Groupement pour leDéveloppement de la TélédétectionAérospatiale) u Toulouseu, Francuska, a 2000.u istoj ustanovi napredni tečaj GIS-a idaljinskih istraivanja GIS Plus. Objavila je nekolikoradova u znanstvenim časopisima i zbornicimameđunarodnih skupova.Magistarski rad sadri 120 stranica formata A4, popisliterature sa 41 naslovom, saetak na hrvatskom iengleskom jeziku te autoričin kratki ivotopis.
