Read more about theagreement. GSBMS Officially Renamed toGraduate School ofBiomedical Sciences   After nearly 60 years, the Graduate Schoolof Basic Medical Sciences will now beknown as the Graduate School ofBiomedical Sciences, undergoing a namechange that properly reflects the variety ofdisciplines within the school. The Board ofTrustees approved the name change thatthe school adopted for the start of the 2022-2023 academic school year. The ceremony washeld in the Nevins Auditorium, MEC, wherestudents were joined by faculty and guestsas we honored the achievements of ouroutstanding graduates. The Commencement speaker was Sherlita Amler, Ph.D.,commissioner of health in Westchester County Department of Health, adjunctprofessor of public health, clinical associate professor of pediatrics and senior fellowin the Center for Disaster Medicine at NYMC. Dean Holz presented the candidatesfor the degrees Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy of the GSBMS Class of2022 and Edward C. The GSA also organizes andcoordinates the Graduate StudentResearch Forum (GSRF), an important,annual event showcasing and supportingstudent research while providing members of the college and the broader scientificcommunity the opportunity to learn about the research work done by the students inthe GSBMS. I am excited to take on theresponsibilities as president of the GSA and to collaborate not only with the new E-board but with the first-year students entering their first year here at NYMC.” Follow the GSA on Instagram @NYMC_GSA. New Accelerated Interdisciplinary Biomedical SciencesMaster’s Program (AMP) CurriculumOrgan systems designed learningSince its inception, the AMP curriculumhas provided its students with acombination of courses from both theGSBMS and the SOM. This year, themedical school has completely redesignedits curriculum transforming it fromdiscipline-based to an integrated format,integrating the basic sciences with organsystems-based learning. The AMPcurriculum has adapted to this new format,with AMP students learning side-by-sidewith medical students within portions ofthe medical school classes, while alsotaking Physiology and Strategies for Effective Scientific Writing in the GSBMS.According to AMP Program Director, Brian B. Ratliff, Ph.D., associate professor ofphysiology and of medicine, “The changing of the AMP curriculum offers AMPstudents a deeper immergence into the first-year curriculum of the M.D. program atNYMC. Messina, Ph.D. ’73,Professor Emeritus of Physiology,Researcher and "The Why Child"His father had it right, calling him “The WhyChild”. From his early childhood, Edward J.Messina, Ph.D. '73, professor emeritus ofphysiology and founder of the GSA, was fullof curiosity, always asking question afterquestion about everything around him. Hismother called him “The Double Hit” as hepushed the limits of their patience with hisdesire to understand how things worked.Growing up in Brooklyn, New York, he wasan observant child, learning from his environment and the interesting people in hislarge, extended family. His grandfather was a renowned chef, his mother, ahousewife, and he watched as his father developed his career starting as anupholsterer, to becoming a successful designer of his own furniture, even designingthe machinery used in making that furniture. In early childhood he developed a loveof horses, observing the horse drawn carts on the street. He befriended “Tony” thehorse pulling the cart that collected newspapers and metal for the war effort andeven at six years old recognized that the horse pulling the Borden Milk cart hadintelligence, independently stopping at the appropriate homes on his street as itmade its way through the neighborhood. Read the full article on Dr. Messina.   FACULTY FEATUREJulie S. Di Martino, Ph.D., assistantprofessor of cell biology andanatomyJulie S. Di Martino, Ph.D., newly appointedassistant professor of cell biology and anatomy,originates from the southwest region of Francefrom Villeneuve Sur Lot. Dr. Di Martino receivedher college education at the University ofBordeaux, where she earned a bachelor’s degreein cell biology, a Master of Science in Genetics,and a Ph.D. in cell biology and pathophysiology. In 2009, Dr. Di Martino joined the laboratory of Christophe Cullin, Ph.D., Professor ofGenetics, University of Bordeaux, France, as an undergraduate trainee. She discoveredthe fascinating world of working with Yeast. Dr. Cullin mentored her and facilitated thediscovery of her passion for the unknown and gave her the strength to pursue anacademic career. Read the full article on Dr. Di Martino. STUDENT FEATUREJacob Hehir, M.D./Ph.D. CandidateAfter growing up in Southern California,M.D./Ph.D. candidate Jacob Hehir, M.D./Ph.D.candidate, went to school at the University ofChicago where he studied neurobiology andmusic. It was there that he had his first labexperience and gained a love for science. Jacobwas accepted into the SOM at NYMC in 2018 andspent his first summer working at the WestchesterMedical Center Balance Center under KatrinaStidham, M.D. He presented his summer researchwith classmate Nadera Rhaman, M.D. ’22 at theMedical Student Research Forum (MSRF) inFebruary 2020 and won the inaugural Arthur Karmen, M.D. Award. He loved having theopportunity to run clinical research projects and afterward wanted to grow more as ascientist. With support from his partner, family, peers and mentor, he applied to theM.D./Ph.D. program during his second year. “I am so grateful to have been accepted, asthis program has given me some of the best and most important experiences in my life.Throughout this program, I have grown as a student, as a researcher, and as a person. Ihave had the privilege to study under Jonathan A. N. Fisher, Ph.D., assistant professor ofphysiology, who has been an incredible source of knowledge, motivation, and wisdomboth on and off the bench.” Current research is centered on testing the effects of low-11/3/22, 1:45 PM Constant Contacthttps://app.constantcontact.com/pages/campaigns/view/list 9/10intensity focused ultrasound (FUS) on the activity of cortical neurons. The goal is tocharacterize the neuromodulatory effects of targeted FUS on parts of the mouse AuditoryCortex and contribute towards this technology becoming a therapeutic for conditions suchas tinnitus and treatment-resistant epilepsy. He presented this work at the 2022 NYCNeuromodulation Conference and will also be presenting at the Society forNeuroscience (SfN) Neuroscience 2022 meeting this November. Jacob notes, “One ofmy favorite parts of studying at NYMC has been the people I meet. When I leave the lab, Ican always count on playing pick-up basketball, volleyball, and even disc golf withstudents at the Touro College of Dental Medicine at NYMC, SOM, and the School ofHealth Sciences and Practice Department of Physical Therapy.
