application/pdfThere is some type of landscape that relaxes to peoples if they walk through it or gaze at it. This feeling of relaxation is based on our response to colors in the environment. The research described here focuses on town and streetscapes that give rise to a comfortable feeling. The community selected for research purposes was a farm village surrounded by rice paddies and containing many histrical buildings. Two scenes of the village viewed from a distance were used as research townscapes, and four scenes within the village were used as research streetscapes. The color conditions of such scenes are analyzed to discover the cause of the comfortable feeling. A town or streetscape where the color composition calls forth a mental and emotional image of richness and abundance is also the most likely to give rise to a comfortable feeling.Bulletin of the University of Osaka Prefecture.
