WilsonSince 1993 the Oklahoma Historical Society has annually honored upto four individuals, both professional and amateur, in its OklahomaHistorians Hall of Fame. Recipients are selected on the basis of theircontributions to the preservation, collection, interpretation, anddissemination of Oklahoma history. This criteria was first pub-lished in The Chronicles of Oklahoma, Volume 72 (Summer 1994).Early honorees included Grant Foreman, Joseph B. Thoburn,Muriel H. Wright, Edward Everett Dale, and Angie Debo. In additionto historians, the award has been bestowed on artist Charles BanksWilson, Cherokee genealogist Emmet Starr, author John JosephMathews, and Apache leader and educator Mildred ImachCleghorn.The inductees are honored at the Awards Banquet held duringthe Oklahoma Historical Society’s Annual Meeting in April eachyear. In April 2007 W. David Baird, Guy W. Logsdon, PendletonWoods, and Martin A. Hagerstrand (posthumously) were inductedinto the Oklahoma Historians Hall of Fame. Woods andHagerstrand are featured in this issue of The Chronicles, and Bairdand Logsdon appeared in the Spring 2007 issue.221Pandleton WoodsSince 1969 Pendleton Woodshas been committed to preserv-ing Oklahoma history. On De-cember 18, 1923, in Fort Smith,Arkansas, Woods was born toJohn Powell and Mabel (Hon)Woods. After he graduated fromFort Smith High School, he at-tended the University of Arkan-sas. During his freshman yearPearl Harbor was attacked.In 1942 he enlisted in the U.S.Army Reserve and later wascalled to active duty and becamea member of the 99th InfantryDivision. While on a reconnais-sance mission behind enemylines, he was captured and sentto a prison labor camp near Berlin. He managed to escape fromprison on April 20, 1945. Returning to civilian life in the UnitedStates, he completed a bachelor’s degree in journalism at the Uni-versity of Arkansas in 1948. On April 3, 1948, Woods married LoisRobin Freeman, and they had three children.From 1948 to 1969 Woods worked as editor and as assistant pub-lishing manager for Oklahoma Gas and Electric Company. In 1969he joined the staff of Oklahoma Christian College (now OklahomaChristian University) as director of the Living Legends Library. Inthis capacity he organized and directed a newly formed oral historyprogram. Working with volunteers and local historical societiesthroughout Oklahoma, Woods managed to collect approximatelythree thousand taped interviews. After he became more involved inother projects at the college, the oral interview collection was givento the Oklahoma Historical Society. Through his association withthe Society, he reinstated the OHS monthly newsletter, MistletoeLeaves, in 1973 and served as editor for ten years. For many yearsWoods wrote a weekly column on state and local history called “His-toric Trails,” which appeared in statewide newspapers.Among Woods’s many accomplishments is his service on theboard and as a volunteer for the 45th Infantry Division Museumsince its conception. He was a founder of the Oklahoma City/County222THE CHRONICLES OF OKLAHOMAHistorical Society and has played an active role in the commemora-tions of the Oklahoma Semi-Centennial, the Oklahoma’s DiamondJubilee, the Will Rogers Centennial, the Centennial of the Run of’89, and the Oklahoma Centennial. In 2001 Woods was inductedinto the Oklahoma Journalism Hall of Fame. The following year hewas honored with induction into the Oklahoma Military Hall ofFame. HagerstrandBorn on November 10, 1911, inChicago, Illinois, Martin AllanHagerstrand was a son of Swedishimmigrants Erland and JennieHagerstrand. Erland Hagerstrandworked as a machinist for an autoshop and for an electric railway. In1934 Martin Hagerstrand joinedthe U.S. Army and attained his com-mission as a second lieutenant inthe Reserve Corps in 1939. DuringWorld War II he served in the Pa-cific Theater. While he was in NewGuinea, he met Marion Brown ofTahlequah, Oklahoma, who was anofficer in the Women’s Army Corps.They married in 1946 in her hometown. Following his duty in World War II, he served in Europe andat the Pentagon. Hagerstrand was on the teaching faculty of theU.S. Army Adjutant Generals School from 1947 to 1951 and on thefaculty of the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College atFort Leavenworth, Kansas, from 1958 to 1960. Before he retiredfrom the military, he attained the rank of colonel.The family returned to Tahlequah in 1960. Hagerstrand soon be-came interested in his wife’s Cherokee heritage. He learned aboutthe history of the Cherokee and founded the Cherokee NationalHistorical Society (CNHS). From 1967 to 1982 Hagerstand editedthe Columns, a newsletter of the CNHS. He also took a leading rolein creating the Cherokee Heritage Center, which opened in 1967.Under his leadership the Trail of Tears Pageant at the Tsa-La-GiTheater began in 1969, and the Cherokee National Museum inTahlequah opened in 1975. From 1993 to 1998 Hagerstrand servedas president of the Five Civilized Tribes Museum, located inMuskogee.Being a native of Illinois and living at Tahlequah in northeasternOklahoma, he decided to travel twenty-five hundred miles through-out western Oklahoma to discover more about that part of the state.Through the years he had been involved in the Oklahoma ArtsCouncil, the Capitol Preservation Commission, and the CapitolDome Task Force. At the age of eighty-sevenHagerstrand accepted the chair of the Oklahoma Centennial Com-mission. Unfortunately, he was killed in an automobile accident nearFort Gibson on July 6, 1999.For his dedication in preserving Cherokee heritage and Oklahomahistory as well as his service to the Oklahoma Historical Society, hewas posthumously inducted into the Oklahoma Historians Hall ofFame. His wife, Marion, accepted the award. Estimated to comprise approximately 750,000 images, theassemblage includes business, industry, portraits, landscapes, andscenic views produced by Hillerman from 1958 until his death in1991. The vast holding also includes the Z. P. Meyers Photo ShopCollection. Hillerman worked for Meyers in the early 1950s. In 1965Hillerman purchased from Meyers a fabulous array of images ofearly Oklahoma City and central Oklahoma. These date to 1919.Several smaller photography companies are also present in theHillerman inventory. An example is Jack Roberts’s rodeo negativesfrom 1971–79. The Barney Hillerman Collection is one of the bestand largest photographic representations of Oklahoma for most ofthe twentieth century.Presently, a major Oklahoma Historical Society Research Centerproject involves digitizing the entire Hillerman Collection. The pro-ject is underwritten by a major grant from the Pauline DwyerMacklanburg and Robert A. Macklanburg, Jr., Foundation. Over thenext three years this support will allow the Research Division toscan and catalog a significant portion of this huge collection. Fouryears ago, in 2003 the Pauline Dwyer Macklanburg and Robert A.Macklanburg, Jr., Foundation generously provided a grant of$30,000 to complete the $150,000 that the OHS required in order topurchase the Hillerman Collection.In turn, these thousands of scanned images will allow greater ac-cessibility to one of the OHS’s most important visual collections.Oklahoma City and many other central Oklahoma communities arerepresented, as well as a legion of product photographs made byHillerman for various advertisements.In keeping with this issue’s focus on Oklahoma at mid-twentiethcentury, we present only a few of the thousands of Hillerman andMyers images capturing the essence of the 1950s era in Oklahomahistory.
