This study pursues the idea and potential of designsteered convergence processes, using the assembly ofa limestone acoustic wall as a ‘vehicle’ for exploring theintegration of computational search methods, patternexpressions, acoustic simulation and collaborativerobotics in design and making processes that arethen tested and compared in terms of their acousticperformances. The work was initiated from visual andacoustic observations at Piazza San Marco in Venice,Italy, and the Antalya-Demre Limestone Quarry in Turkey.Venice has an impressive display of articulatedlimestone, where the combination of colour nuances,geometries, patterns and stone erosion provide theunique characteristics that attract thousands of peopleto the city every year (fig.1). While it is reputedly the mostvisited square in the world, Piazza San Marco is alsoposited to be one of the most quiet, due to the lack oftraffic and the acoustic properties of the stone usedin the buildings (Horowitz, 2013). In the case of Turkey,upon invitation to the Istanbul Design Biennale, we werebrought into direct contact with the Antalya-DemreLimestone Quarry, which provided a unique opportunityto study, explore and identify integrated designprocesses, including acoustics, limestone, designcomputation, brick patterns and robotic fabricationprocesses
