IntroductionRutylapa Edwards, 1929, is a rather small groupin the tribe Orfeliini of the Keroplatinae, repre-sented by about 17 species (not including the spe-cies dealt with here) found in the world (Evenhuis2006). Of these, most of the species are knownfrom the Afrotropical Region and the Austral-asian Region. Only one species is known from thePalaearctic Region and four species from the Ori-ental Region.This is the first report of the genus Rutylapafrom southwest China, as a new species amongthe specimens deposited in the entomologicalcollection of Zhejiang Forestry College, Lin’an,Zhejiang, P. R. China (ZJFC) was discovered.Undoubtedly, this is a significant addition to theknowledge of the genus Rutylapa in SoutheastAsia.The genus Rutylapa is distinguished fromother related genera by the following characters(Edwards 1929, Søli et al. 2000): branches of Mand CuA bare dorsally; posterior margin of ante-rior spiracle with erect black hairs; laterotergitebare; tibial setae in even rows on entire length oftibia; anterior spur of mid and hind tibia presentbut minute; vein A1 almost reaching wing mar-gin.2. Material and methodsSpecimens were collected by sweeping and pre-served in 80% alcohol. Holotype and paratype of© Entomologica Fennica. 28 October 2009the new species are deposited in ZJFC. Morpho-logical terminology used follows that of Søli et al.(2000).3. Description of Rutylapa longaCao & Xu, sp. n. (Fig. 1)Material studied. Holotype # (ZJFC 060188)and paratype #. China, Sichuan province, Wo-long National Natural Reserve, 21.VII.2006, JianCao.Description. Male. Lengths: Body: 6.0 mm;wing: 5.1 mm.Head. Vertex and occiput yellowish brownwith fairly dense small black recumbent hairs.Three ocelli, median ocellus very small. Fronsyellowish brown, bare. Antennae: scape and pe-dicel yellow. Flagellum: 14 segments, each with afew long setae; segment I dark brown with yellowbasally, other dark brown, terminal segment ta-pered (Fig. 1a). Face dark brown with pale yellowlaterally. Palpus: palpomere I obscurely yellow,palpomere II brown, palpomere III pale brown,palpomere IV pale yellow, long and slender.Thorax. Mesonotum yellowish brown, uni-formly setose; patch of thick black setae abovewing root. Scutellum yellow, with a row of longdark setae on posterior margin. Anepisternumand laterotergite obscurely yellow, bare; kate-pisternum pale yellow, bare; mediotergite yellowwith brown above, with a few short black setaeapically. Halter pale yellow, knob pale brown.Legs. Yellow. Tibiae with few setae and tibialsetulae forming distinct regular rows throughout.Fore tibia without comb, mid tibia with onlyblack posterior comb, hind tibia with black ante-rior and posterior combs. Tibial spurs black, foreand mid tibial spurs minute, shorter than thick-ness of tibial apex; anterior spur of hind tibia veryminute, less than one-fifth of the posterior, poste-rior spur of hind tibia well developed, 2–2.5 timesas long as the thickness of hind apex. Forebasitarsus 1.2 times as long as length of fore tibia,hind and mid basitarsi 0.8–0.9 times as long aslength of respective tibiae.Wing (Fig. 1b). Hyaline with a pale brownspot subapically from costa to apex of cell m2 anda little pale spot around CuA2 subapically. Veinsyellowish brown. Costa reaching one-third dis-tance from R5 to M1; Sc ends in C reaching thelevel of mid of Rs; Sc2 situated at level of basal0.1–0.2 between h and tip of Sc. Distance be-tween tips of R1 and R4 1.8–2.0 times as long asR4. Ratio of radiomedial fusion / petiole of M:2.0–2.4. Petiole of M one-fifth as long as lengthof M1. Veins M2 and A1 not reaching wing mar-gin.Abdomen. Tergite I obscurely yellow; tergitesII–IV yellow with little irregular brown spotposterolaterally; tergite V dark brown with yel-low triangular spot basally; tergite VI darkbrown. Sternite I obscurely yellow with little darkbrown spot apically; Sternite II dark brown withyellow medially; sternites III–IV yellow withdark brown triangular spot posteromedially;sternites V–VI dark brown.Hypopygium (Fig. 1c–e). Yellow, rotated180º. Tergite IX tapered from base to apex andsubequal in length to gonocoxite. Cercus visiblein dorsal view, subtriangular; hypoproct elon-gated, about 2.0 times as long as cercus. Gono-coxite broad, with black stout setae medially anddense fine setae laterally. Gonostylus consistingof two lobes; inner lobe slightly bending outwardapically, short, with dense black stiff setae on api-cal half; outer lobe slightly bending downwardand tapered apically, 2.0 times as long as innerlobe, with black stiff setae anteroventrally.Female. Unknown.Etymology. The species epithet derives fromthe Latin longus = long, referring to the longhypoproct.Diagnosis. Rutylapa longa is similar to theother Palaearctic species of the genus, R. rufi-cornis Zetterstedt, 1851 (see Edwards 1913), butthe new species is easily distinguished by theshape of its terminalia, e.g. hypoproct elongated,about 2.0 times as long as cercus, while in R. rufi-cornis hypoproct is short and indistinct. TergiteIX appears more elongated and tapered on theapical half in R. longa, and the pair of lobes on theapical margin of the gonocoxites are muchsmaller and with a short and narrow medianemargination, while in R. ruficornis these lobesare broadly rounded and with a wide medialemargination.Acknowledgements.
