Typically these laminate are manufactured with the fibersplaced in straight patterns intersected between them providing a constant stiffness overthe whole structure (CSCL - Constant Stiffness Composite Laminate). The laminateswith a variable stiffness (VSCL - Variable Stiffness Composite Laminate) are in the spot-lights because of they allow the stiffness/mass ratio to be increased improving the rigidityonly in the critical areas, saving weight where is possible. Different approaches can bepossible, but thanks to the new automatic manufacturing processes, the Variable AngleTow (VAT) composites are of great interest. This method removes the imposition to havestraight fibers and allows composite material with curvilinear fibers to be produced. Thisapproach increases the design possibilities and provides a more efficient tailoring processfor the definition of the material proprieties. The use of the VAT allows the redirectionof the stress fluxes, local stiffness increases, to control the vibrational behavior or the in-troduction of coupling effects to be possible guaranteeing excellent control on the weightof the laminate. Considering complicated pattern where the trajectory is a function oftwo or more variables, the material coefficients have to be integrated into the definitionof the global stiffness matrix. Because of the limited capacities of the classical models,efficient tools are required to provide an accurate prediction of displacements, stresses orof the modal behavior. A refined beam model based on the Carrera Unified Formulation(CUF) able to deal with the VAT problem is proposed in this work. The CUF introducesexpansions to approximate the displacement field over the cross-section in the definitionof the model kinematics providing a a layer-wise approach [1]. In this way, each layercan be characterized by different proprieties and also by a different pattern of the fiber.The work proposes an extensive assessment on free-vibration analyses of VAT laminatesand results compared with literature.
