HASKINS*** ABSTRACT - A lack of published information regarding Minnesota Myxomycetes prompted at-tempts to document species from Lake Itasca State Park in Clearwater county, in the northwest part of the state. Seventy-five species are herein recorded from 341 collections made during the years 1959, 1971,and 1975-78. Myxomycetes collected primarily during summer sessions at the Forestry and Biological Station of the University of Minnesota at Lake Itasca State Park are herein recorded. In 1959 and 1977 collections were made from June through September. In the other years intense collecting was limited to 4-5 week periods. This list of 75 species from 341 collections represents, to our knowledge, the first extensive study of the Myxomycetes of Minnesota. It includes both frequently and infrequently collected taxa but makes no pretense of being exhaustive. These organisms, commonly termed slime molds, are well represented in northern Minnesota. They are most fre-quently encountered in habitats where temperature and moisture conditions are favorable for both the Myxomy-cetes, and the bacteria and fungi on which the organisms graze. Myxomycete fru tifications are most often found on dead wood, plant debris, bark, moss, dung, and living plants. The Myxomycetes have excited interest for various rea-sons. They have been exploited extensively as research tools in the investigation of fundamental biological pro-cesses, e.g. cell differentiation, cell movement, and the con-trol of thes~ and other processes . They are frequently utilized in the classroom to demonstrate plasmodial stream-ing, amoeboid movement and holozoic nutrition. Names and classification are according to Martin and Alexopoulos ( 4) and Farr ( 1,2,3). Stewart and Hubbard collections were given Stewart numbers and placed in the Mycological Herbarium of the Department of Plant Pathology, University of Minnesota, St. Paul, Minnesota (MPPD). Palm collections are deposited in MPPD. Collections made by Louise Dosdall in 1926 also are housed in MPPD. Gage and Haskins collections are retained in their private herbaria (PH).
