fy&íeüa de Lbo-fiicaíUiad T^iaúíeUad Manuel Augusto PIRAJá DA SILVA Nascido aos 28 de janeiro de 1873, em Camamu (Bahia), douto- rou-se em Medicina em 1896 pela Faculdade da Bahia. Foi assistente da l- Cadeira de Clínica Médica (1902-1911), tendo sido nomeado pro- fessor ordinário de História Natural Médica (Parasitologia) daquela Faculdade em 1911, cargo que ocupou até sua aposentadoria em 1935. Fez, em 1909, o curso de microbiologia no Instituto Pasteur de Paris e o de doenças navais e tropicais no Tropeninstitut de Hamburgo e, em 1911, o do I. M. C. de Paris, sendo classificado em 1' lugar, com o título de Major. Pirajá da Silva estudou todo o grupo das doenças tropicais que grassavam na Bahia, no comêço do século, sendo o pioneiro em identi- ficá-las à luz do microscópio. Contribuiu assim para o esclarecimento da esquistossomose intestinal, da disenteria amebiana, da leishmaniose tegumentar, da doença de Chagas, das miíases, das micoses (blastomi- cose e maduromicose), do ainhun, etc. Seu trabalho original de maior envergadura foi a descoberta e identificação do Schistosoma mansoni, em 1908, com a apresentação, ao mundo científico de então, da primeira descrição completa dêsse parasita, a dirimir a velha e acirrada con- trovérsia entre as escolas de Medicina Tropical de Londres e do Cairo. Também descobriu e descreveu a cercaria do 5. mansoni, em 1912, an- tes de se conhecer o ciclo evolutivo dêsse trematódeo. Colaborou intensamente nos "Archives de Parasitologie" e no "The Journal of Tropical Medicine" de Londres. Foi inspetor-sanitário-chefe da Profilaxia Rural na Bahia, de 1921 a 1933. Manteve importante intercâmbio científico com o Instituto Butantã, de 1920 a 1924, dirigindo o Pôsto Anti-Ofídico da Bahia. Foi, também, professor de História Natural no Ginásio da Bahia, de 1914 a 1935. Em 1954, recebeu a Medalha Nocht e, em 1956, a Grã-Cruz da Ordem do Mérito Médico do Brasil. "Doutor honoris causa" pela Uni- versidade de São Paulo e Professor de igual categoria pela Escola de Medicina e Saúde Pública da Bahia. Analisou as obras de Martius e de Gabriel Soares, apresentando exaustivas contribuições pessoais sobre ambas. Vive atualmente em São Paulo, com 86 anos. 85 QMety o-( Tiiakiíian UapicaíUtti Manuel Augusto PIRAJá DA SILVA Pirajá da Silva was born January 28th, 1873, in Camamu (Bahia) and graduated 1896 in Medicine from the School of Medicine of Bahia. He was Assistant Professor of the First Department of Clinicai Medicine (1902-1911), being appointed Ordinary Professor of Medicai Natural History (Parasitology) of the same School in 1911. As such he remained until his retirement in 1935. In 1909 he attended the course on Microbiology of the Institut Pasteur of Paris, as well as the one on Tropical and Naval Diseases of the Tropeninstitut in Hamburg. Further on, in 1911, he attended the I. M. C. course in Paris, having gotten first honours with the title of Major. Pirajá da Silva studied ali the tropical diseases that raged in Bahia at the beginning of the century. He was a pioneer concerning the microscopical identification, thus contributing to the knowledge of the intestinal schistosomiasis, amoebic dysentery, cutaneous leish- maniasis, Chagas' disease, myiases, mycoses (blastomycosis and maduro- mycosis), ainhum and others. His most important original contribution to science was the discovery and identification of the Schistosoma mansoni in 1908, presenting the extant scientific world with the first complete description of the parasite. Thus an ancient and violent controversy between the London and the Cayro schools of tropical medicine was settled. The cercaria of the S. mansoni was also dis- covered by him in 1912, before the evolutive cycle of this trematode was known. He also contributed extensively to the "Archives de Pa- rasitologie" of Paris and to the "Journal of Tropical Medicine" of London. From 1921 to 1933 Pirajá da Silva was Chief Sanitary Inspector of Rural Prophylaxis in Bahia. From 1920 to 1924, while Director of the Anti-Ophidic Center of Bahia, he carried out an important scientific exchange with the Instituto Butantã of São Paulo. The High School of Bahia had him as Professor of Natural History from 1914 to 1935. In 1954 Pirajá da Silva was awarded the Nocht Medal and, in 1956, the Cross of the Order of Medicai Merit of Brazil. He is a Doctor honoris causa of the São Paulo University as well as Professor honoris causa also of the School of Medicine and Public Health of Bahia. Aged 86, Pirajá da Silva lives at present in São Paulo. 1 ^ Tr ■?»
